Hi All
I have a 40 x 40 ft x 20 ft high steel building that will be erected in a couple of months.
I want to first build a control room and then the live room and iso rooms later.
My question is should I beef up the foundation example double the rebar, use a thicker pad (6 inches instead of 4) and go with a higher stress concrete.
I really do not want to rush a design but I want to get the building up before some of our local codes change
I want to build a control room with 15 ft high ceilings and thick dense walls (I will need max isolation for all rooms. I am in a us airforce base f16 landing path ) and I do not want to have the foundation crumbling under the weight.
I have attached 2 drawings. 1 is a cross section of the steel building and the other is a crude rough layout for my studio.
any advice in this mater would be appreciated

Aloha and welcome to the forum, Duane
Perhaps you might want to post this question under the "Construction Forum." Rod Gervais is the guy you want. And while you're at it, perhaps you might consider picking up a copy of his book - Home Recording Studio: Build it Like the Pros (Paperback) by Rod Gervais http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5670 as it will cover a lot of the questions and situations you are about to experience. In the meantime, we'll take a look at your control room design here, and post a few ideas. Looking forward to your build! Aloha,
Q - According to your initial layout, were you planning for a 5.1 setup?
Here are a couple of views of an idea for your review -
In Rod Gervais’ book “Build it Like the Pros,” http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5670 he points out both L.W.Sepmeyer’s & M.M. Louden’s formulas most widely used in professional studios worldwide. He also notes that the orders listed are (top to bottom) the first to third best ratios in both cases.
M.M. Louden
Height Width Length
1.00 1.40 1.90 15’ x 21’ x 28’5”
1.00 1.30 1.90
1.00 1.50 2.10
L.W. Sepmeyer
Height Width Length
1.00 1.14 1.39
1.00 1.28 1.54
1.00 1.60 2.33
- Side slat walls are @ 12 degrees
- Front soffit walls are @ 30 degrees
- Doors, windows to be determined by your work flow
Hope this helps,
Aloha 8)
Thank you kendale for your time. I will get the book and I will post this over at the studio construction forum
Thanks again
