hello, i only recently stumbled upon this forum so i'm a total newbie here and this is my first post. i've spent a few hours reading here already (and many more to go - this is an invaluable resource). apologies in advance if i don't get everything right - i wouldn't be asking for assistance so soon if i didn't have a pressing need for your collective guidance.
i'm shortly going to be moving into a house in the Los Angeles area. i'm planning to set up a studio in the oddly shaped room illustrated in the attached illustration and Sketchup drawing (neat app). both are to scale - the width of the room is a little over 28' (by 11' at the left side to 13' 4" on the right side). the room is located above a garage. the walls are drywall and the flooring is carpeted. there are four windows shown along the walls - i'll try and silence them with the window plug suggestions that i've read about already. the green rectangle to the lower left is an enclosed drywall closet. the yellow rectangle to the lower right is an enclosed tiled and drywall washroom. i'm not sure why the doorswings and text aren't shown - you can see these in the Sketchup drawing.
the room will be primarily for me to write, record, mix and home master (i know, i know). the instrumentation will be primarily synthesizers, samplers, sound modules, treated guitars, etc., loosely in electronic, ambient and soundtrack genres. as such, i want to keep the room open as it is currently. if i need to record vocals or isolate guitar or amps - my plan is just to move these into either the closet or the water closet (dry and wet rooms!). unfortunately, i don't have the luxuries of time, money or inclination to be building up irregularly angled walls, raised floors, etc. instead, i'll sound treat the room as necessary to mitigate.
my primary recording setup is Pro Tools HD on a Macintosh G5 with Mackie HUI control surface, monitored via KRK V88 (front-ported mid-fields with dual 8" cones) and JBL Control LA (like Control 1 but titanium tweeters).
***my question for you infinitely wiser and more experienced folks is, given this space and the above parameters, where would you ideally situate the mixing position (desk and mid-fields)?***
because of the windows along the primary outside wall positions, i've been thinking of putting the mixing position in the center of the room with the equilateral triangle pointing to the right. this would minimize reflections from the back of the mid-fields though increase reflections from the outside wall on the right.
***is this an unworkable placement? would it be impossible to tame the reflections from the (rear) wall (on the right)? if not in the center, where else should i consider?****
the budget initially is very minimal - a couple of fresh coats of paint and carpet cleaning? the number one imperative is getting the gear moved into the space quickly and at least somewhat set up and functional soon thereafter. over time, i'll plug the windows, install acoustic treatment, put in an insulated door, get proper console furniture, etc., that i will rely upon the fount of knowledge already existing in this forum.
***okay, i'll impose one further question. any suggestions on what color(s) to paint the walls? i was thinking a bright nautical blue motif - the house is somewhat near the beach and ocean and one of my favorite songs is The Orb's Blue Room. is it too oppressive to do all the walls in one color? what would be a good color to offset the bright nautical blue? any suggestions?
many thanks in advance.
REQ: where would you situate the mixing desk in this room?

Aloha and welcome to the forum!
A couple of items for your consideration:
- Firstly, be sure to consult with a structural engineer to ensure that the structure can support the extra weight of a studio build. (e.g. 2-3 layers of drywall + insulation + additional acoustic treatments + studio equipment + musicians etc.) Be safe!
- Secondly, how tall is your ceiling?
Looking forward to your build!
Aloha 8)
- structural weight
check.
- Secondly, how tall is your ceiling?
i just went to measure. the ceiling is 8' high. the windows are all 40" high, 3' off the floor.
thanks for looking and asking.
