Hi all, I’m from Germany and this is my first post, but probably it’s not the last. I know, my english is not good enough to describe so many things with special and technical words. But because I can’t get required help on any german sites and a lot of people told me that the best help I can get in studio planning is here, I’ll try it though. Hopefully you’ll understand and can help me: Recently I’ve done a little private studio annex beside my own house. You can see the wall measurements at the enclosed PDF (there are two rooms drawed in red lines, the bigger room [25,19qm] is the studio, the measurements are all metric). The window measurements are smaller then on the drawing (60cm x 80cm). The walls are built on a concrete slab (18 cm) with firm connection on earth. The ceiling is also of concrete (16 cm) and above it there’s a roof of brick. The height between concrete slab an ceiling is 2,56m. Now I have to plan the muffle and acoustic inside the room. And especially the muffle must be as good as nothing could be heard outside the studio, because of my neighbors and my two little children living in the house. Shure I also would like to have a good acoustic, so that I can make some good recordings. But I’m not a professional musician so that the muffle has privilege. The music style we (a friend of mine and me) prefer is some kind of hard-rock with drums, guitar, bass and keyboard, so sometimes louder music (and often we only have time to play at the evening or at night). The recordings we want to make are also instrumental and by computer. But before I would like to get some good ideas regarding the whole studio construction (absorbation construct etc.), I need a piece of advice regarding the following installations: 1.) The studio also should have a partition between control and recording, but at this point I don’t know exactly where the best position is. Do you have a good idea and can you explain why you choose this position? And do I need massive limestone for the partition or not? 2.) Selection and installation of the window (what kind of windowpane(s), 1 or 2 windowpanes, incliniation of the windowpanes(s) – pay attention: the muffle is the most important!) 3.) Selection and installation of the door between the two rooms of the annex (a fireproof door?, do I need two doors [one open inside and the other outside?]) 4.) Selection and installation of the heating (I have a gas heating in my house [the main hook-up is right to the studio [“HWR”-room]. Should I take there a gas heating too? And what do I have to consider then regarding the heating pipes especially at the crossing between the rooms [house => studio, recording => control]? And how do I install and muffle the pipes, if I – as I read here - don’t need to cast plaster floor on my concrete slab? Or is a mobile electrical heating enough?) 5.) Placement of the circuit and the cables (how many current lines?, how many hook-ups and where?, how many connections between control and recording-room?, how many outlets and where to place [under or on the plaster]? – I think, if someone could draw me a concrete current plan, he would do me a great favor… Ok, I guess that’s it for now. Hopefully you could understand what I wanted to know. Naturally I also hope that you can help me at least in some of my described points. In case of that I already want to say: Thank you !!! Greatings, Topo P.S.: If you want or need to, I can put in some pics of inside and outside the studio.

Aloha and welcome to the forum, Topo :D Congrats on your studio build! Any chance you could please:
Edit your profile to include your location. This is very important, because this is a worldwide resource, and as such, material costs and availability vary widely. For example, masonry is cheaper than gypsum in some parts of the globe, whereas it's the exact opposite in other regions.
This will really come in handy two or three posts down the road. It's also part of the forum guidelines. Thanks! Here's a pic of your floorplan for easier reference. Looking forward to your build! Aloha 8)

Hi Topo - is this what you had in mind? It's hard to tell from your plan where the access doors are - anyway here's my take on it. cheers john

Hi John, thanks for your quick design suggestion and you put the access doors at the right place. Originally I wanted to have the recording room a little bit bigger than the control (maybe 60-40 or 70-30) and at the place where you put the control room. But if you mean that this is the better choice... Anyway could you please write some more details of your drawing? And what about the window place on the right side of the control room? There's nothing drawed... Greetings, Topo BTW: The "booth" room is a storeroom for bicycles etc. So there's no need for a double window at that partition...
