Hey guys. This is my first post on this great site and I have a 2 part question.
I just took over the lease on a great building. My studio will be on the end of the building and is divided from another business by a wall. I ripped the drywall off that wall and found a surprise on the other side. There are 18" strips that look like drywall but they have been drilled with 1" holes and there is what I assume is plaster applied to that. It oozed through the holes and made hundreds of little plaster knobs on the inside of the wall. I'm thinking all these holes, even though they're filled with plaster, could be an isolation nightmare. My plan is to seal it with caulk as well as I can, insulate it, and then I'm going to frame another wall that is insulated and covered with 2 layers of drywall.
1. I'm wondering if there is anything special that I should do inside that wall to make it better.
The other part of my question involves 30 sheets of Celotex Sound Stop sound board that the previous tenant left behind.
2. Should I incorporate that into my wall in some way?
I have learned soooo much from this site and really appreciate all the time that has gone into posts here.
Thanks a ton!

Hard to tell exactly what it is, it sounds like it's pre-perforated masonite or something similar. A good idea might be to apply a layer of drywall on the other tenants side (or maybe two!) if that's an option.

Thanks for the reply. Adding drywall to the other side was my first thought too.... BUT my neighbors have a HUGE cloth covered wall there and getting into tearing that up is a bad idea. That leaves me with inside the wall options only.
Sure - think about it - they aren't as good as drywall by 1/2 - but then again you got them for free - installing them can't hurt you as long as you don't rely on them too much...... what little gain you get is still a gain... RodHey guys. This is my first post on this great site and I have a 2 part question. It's called Gypsum Lath - manufactured specifically for gypsum based plaster applications. There are 18" strips that look like drywall but they have been drilled with 1" holes and there is what I assume is plaster applied to that.It oozed through the holes and made hundreds of little plaster knobs on the inside of the wall. I'm thinking all these holes, even though they're filled with plaster, could be an isolation nightmare. My plan is to seal it with caulk as well as I can, insulate it, and then I'm going to frame another wall that is insulated and covered with 2 layers of drywall.I wouldn't waste my time on caulk - and I wouldn't get to crazy worrying - BTW- the little plaster knobs are called "keys" Well, what I would do would be to install a layer of drywallbetween the stud bays..... and then once i had one completely done - I wold install expansive foam to fill the void between the 2. This will effectively bond them to make them one leaf....... You could always add another sheet or 2 of drywal inside the cavity after the foam set up.The other part of my question involves 30 sheets of Celotex Sound Stop sound board that the previous tenant left behind. 2. Should I incorporate that into my wall in some way?
