Hello everyone. I discovered this site about 2 weeks ago and have surfed here almost non-stop since. Originally I had grand plans of creating my own studio. After reading many many posts here I have realized the only thing I have to offer to the building of my studio is dollars and desire. I live in Westchester County, New York (about 1 hour north of New York City). I am looking for a design consultant to help me plan and design my space. My space will be in my basement. The space I want to use (I just got the OK from the wife!) has cement floor, poured concrete walls, and unfinished ceiling (open). The dimensions are approximately 12 feet wide by 25 feet long and on one end the shape is tapered down to approximately a 6 foot point (underneath a bay window) if that helps. The ceiling is about 15 feet tall. In any event, I am interested in building a space that will be used primarily for playing out for myself and maybe a couple of friends, and also have room to grow into a recording space. My budget is approximately US$5,000 - 7,000 dollars. If anyone knows of anyone who would be willing to advise me on some plans, I am open to suggestions. The dimensions on the picture are slightly off. The total length of the space is about 25 feet and the straight edge at top is about 8 feet wide. Thank you. Jack

I'm sure Kendale will be along shortly but if you read the top stickie about posting, it will help you to provide everyone with the information they need to help you... if you can post a detailed (measurement) floor plan showing support beams, plumbing, doors, windows, HVAC, utilities, etc... (sketchup is free from google and you can do a simple floor plan pretty easily). things such as isolation requirements, types of music, existing noise in the basement and around the house, etc...
I have a floorplan of my studio, but can't figure out how to post it. I've read the sticky and am still lost. Help? Thank you in advance.
hey, when you add a post, down the bottom is "add attachment" up load your JPG or SKP there. Make sure the file size is not too big and the image size is under 700pxl. If there is an error it take syou back to the top of the page and in small print it tells you what went wrong. I missed it the first few times too.
Aloha and welcome to the forum Jack, Congrats on your studio build! A few questions, if I may. On your diagram: - Is this the correct measurement in the circled area? - At what point does the ceiling begin to slope? Aloha 8)

Here is a slightly more detailed picture of the space with a sense of the larger basement. The part outlined in red is what I can use for my studio. Ceiling height is 14.5 feet all the way across. Walls are poured concrete. floor is slab concrete, I play pretty quietly and am NOT concerned about noise leakage out. Mostly I am looking for a rehearsal space for me and the occaisonal jam buddy as well as a recording set up. As it's just me, I don't think I need an isolation/vocal booth. Thank you for all your ideas! jack

Aloha Jack, Um...pic? Aloha 8)
Aloha, OK, cool. Had to resize (700 pixels wide) to avoid scrolling. Let's see what you've got...back in a bit. Aloha 8)

If it is mostly going to be just me recording myself, do I really need a separate room from the control room? I would most likely do vocals / guitar / on separate tracks on separate takes and then later add percussion synthetically (through the computer). Aloha!
Aloha Jack,

That's really up to you. There are a number of threads that are also using the "one room approach." Most of the work that I do is exactly like what you've described, however, on the projects I've done with a client, I really wish I had a separate iso booth. I could also really use the extra storage space for the extra guitars/cases/mic stands/etc to eliminate cluttering up the control room. Perhaps John or Glenn might have another design idea that would serve you better. In the meantime, I'll try to come up with another idea for you. Aloha 8)
