I didn't know were to post this so here it is: Would it be possible to bypass the HVAC system by having a minisplit for heating and cooling and an air cleaner? Thanks
by air cleaner you are referring to a HEPA type air filtration unit? the most important thing (at least here in NJ  ) is oxygen and removal of CO2 and CO from the air. to do that, you need some form of air exchange which can change the air in the space. So while heating and cooling and filtered air are important aspects, the air exchange is often overlooked and in a sealed room environment like a studio can become very important. when you start to examine the permutations of air exchange in a sealed environment, you either A) need very large openings in walls that open into a space where the air is exchanged (this generally defeats sound isolation), B) some sort of pipes that can be used to circulate the air (generally designed for keeping sound isolation intact), or C) some of A and B. Some people use the split units to keep things cool but keep all the doors and windows open whenever they're not recording or mixing to allow circulation and air exchange. this has limitations and might not meet code (as well as safety). If you get Rod's book, you'll see some examples of a "cool room" which can be used to perform the HVAC function and probably at less cost. however it may take up more space and be less efficient. depending on where you live, equipment, operating costs, installation, permits, etc... can vary substantially.
