I am wondering if the placement of my drumkit, facing away, or towards any particular direction has more or less impact on the way the sound will affect my neighbors? Since i am still in the planning stage, i can orient the kit so that say, it is located on the far wall, farthest from the walls nearest the neighbors house? Or conversly, should i place the kit close to the wall near the neighbors, and directionally playing away? Also, should i be thinking of bass panel absorbers directly behind the kit?
bmp?
Simply put does putting the drums further away from a wall you don't want sound to hit hardest matter, or which way you face them??
it doesn't matter, the only difference you'll get when moving the kit around, is different phase cancellations from modes. Acoustical treatment won't really help all to much either, it might make the slightest difference, but probably not a noticeable one. Your neighbors are pretty much screwed, speaking from experience. The only option would be to build additional walls, and insulate them properly. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's the case, perhaps somebody more experienced has input. But as to your last question, putting the drums further away from the wall doesn't really matter, nor does it matter if they're facing them or not, because the reflections off the walls in front of you, will protrude behind you, along with the fact that the drums output sound from the top and bottom of the heads, which would mean whether you're in front or back of the drums, it should be about the same loudness, even in an open field with no reflections. Again, I could be wrong.
I have experianced a slight ( very slight) amount of difference (lower impact of kick drum) facing the kick drum away from the source you want to protect, but the volume is overall about the same, just not a real sharp impact punch of the kick. The low frequencies are what kills you... they walk through walls.
