Hi Everybody,
This is my first post on the site so i want to take the time to firstly thank everybody for their knowledge and ideas.
I was referred to the site about a few weeks ago and i must say that i have been glued to the screen for hours on end since.
I have moved and i want to set up my equipment in my new bedroom space.
The Brief
1. To treat the room so that it sounds as good as a bedroom can sound...
2. To create an ergonomic space that can house all of my equipment (mackie 8bus, lots of keyboards and guitars, dj setup and a few racks of equipment)
The Room
Dimensions: Length 4100mm Width 3640mm height 2500mm
Construction:
Walls - Solid Brick
Floor - Oak Hardwood on joists and bearers. 1 ft airgap to dirt - have put sound absorbing material (residential stuff) in between the joists.
Ceiling - Plasterboard 10mm suspended on faring channels - will add insulation at a later date.
Window - Crappy aluminium window - 4mm standard glass
Research so far
I have spent a fair bit of time trying to work out how to fit all of my equipment in this smallish space. It will also be where i sleep (for now) so i have to accommodate a small bed (of chastity) as well.
I did not know much about acoustic treatment a few weeks ago. Since then i have read all of the sae stuff as well as Ethan’s numerous articles and all the posts i could find relating to bedrooms and small control rooms.
What i plan to do is form a guided opinion of where and how i will add absorbers (a couple of corner bass traps - possibly helmholz) treatments on the back wall, sides and roof??) and then get my studio benches and shelves built to spec. Then when the room is fully fitted out i will do a full sweep and look into tuning the helmholz resonators if needed and add or move absorbers if needed.
At this stage it is half empty and it sounds absolutely horrible... (i was in a small carpeted room before and it sounded heaps better)
I have designed a sample layout using lightwave.
NORTH WALL = Window and main monitor setup
SOUTH WALL = DJ Setup
WEST WALL = Mackie mixer
EAST WALL = Bed and keyboards
Questions
1 - My bed is on the right side of the main monitors (north wall / window) Will the difference in surfaces in right and left sides seriously affect the sound quality? - My other alternative is to place the monitors on the west wall so that the bed is behind the speakers but then i will have a window on the right side and it will be on the shorter axis of the room.
2 - i plan to add a large rear absorer behind the shelves in the dj setup.
Will it work well behind the shelves when they are full? My idea was to build one that is 4 feet x 8 feet - with 50mm rockwool and 50mm airgap to wall.
Is this good enough - i dont really have space to make it thicker... but could make it 100mm rockwool and 50mm airgap if i had too.
3 - i want to add corner bass traps to left side of window (north wall) and under the benches on left side south wall. Will this be enough and will the fact that they are both on the left speaker side be a problem??
4 - i can add those nifty diagonal slot resonators or absorbers on the east wall (above the bed) and west wall (will modify shelve layout) do they need to be the same size?
5 - i can add celing absorbers wherever needed. (2 above my listening position okay?)
Basically, i am hoping that i can modify this layout accomodate all the absorption needed as it puts all of my equipment in a good working space.
If anybody feels that it needs to be complety moved around i could do it if i really had to.
thanks for reading my post - I would appreciate any correspondence.
thanks in advance!!!
Midi studio / control room in a bedroom

maybe put the bed on one end (since sleeping often has less dependencies on proper room symmetry than audio work :) ) and then give the room some nice acoustic treatments including a cloud (not shown here). if you could rig the bed to flip up against the wall it would give you some more floor space and probably add some bass trapping... you could put a row cabinets under the (flipup) bed to store your vinyl.
Hey Gullfo,
thanks for your prompt reply :)
i have been away for a bit but now i'm back.
I had thought of this option too and i wasnt gonna consider it until i found a sofa bed that was actually comfortable..... well looks like i found one so now i am gonna consider this option.
I will post some sketches up for your (and anyone else's) approval hopefully in a week or so.
Thanks again!
