Hi guys!
I'm Stefano from Bologna, Italy, and after hours of leeching and reading Rod Gervais great book I think it's time for me to show you my project and ask some questions.
I have an empty basement of 23 by 33 feet with heights ranging from 8 to 10 (picture sizes are in meters).
I want to turn this space into a practice room, big enough to accommodate 5/6 musicians (my bands: I am the drummer ;-) ).
 BUT: I don't want to build static walls to divide the space, since the basement is meant to be a multi-purpose entertainment room (with table, TV, maybe a pool table...) and it would be a pity to loose the "open space" feeling.
How loud am I? I think SPL of double-bass drum and heavy-metal guitars range around 95/100 dB, isn't it?
My neighbors have a similar basement on the other side of the wall without door. Also, two storeys over my head there are the bedrooms.
Two of the basement wall (long side) are made of poured concrete, same as the floor (now covered with tiles) and all the ceiling. Behind this walls there is only ground, except for the highest part (where windows are).
Remaining "short" walls are made of a double layer of bricks: behind them are neighbour's basement and my staircase, accessed by a fire-safe door.
I want to be able to play 'till midnight or 1 AM, making sure that no noise or vibration will reach the bedrooms. Doesn't matter if some sound is heard in my neighbor's basement.
 My solution: I was thinking about putting the "room" in the center of the space (between the columns) using sliding panels with sound isolation and sound absorption (in the inner side) properties.
I found some pre-built multilayered materials like:
http://www.rwpanel.com/zkwsbeng.htm
http://www.lafarge-gessi.com/schede/acc ... EGYVER.pdf
My plan for optimum isolation (Rw ~ 45):
| gypsum+rockwool (air) rockwool+gypsum | (thickness: ~ 100mm)
...Panels will slide on a rail fixed to the ceiling while wheels mounted on the sides will support the load (about 100 Kg for each panel in the worst case). Air gaps in panel/panel and panel/floor/ceiling connections will be closed with rubber. Panels will be 1,2x2,5 meters for a thickness of 0,1 meters (or similar). All the building process is on me: I'll begin when I have figured out what's best for my purpose.
Instruments (drums, guitar cabinets, bass amp) will be decoupled from the ground to avoid transmission of vibrations.
I think that's it... My budget is about 5000 euros, but I think the result is the important thing, I want to be satisfied with it at the end of the work.
 PROs:
- easy to build
- low cost, if compared to complete soundproofing of the room
- good looking
- no air conditioning needed
- possibility to vary the room acoustic performance if no isolation needed (opening/closing single panels)
- preserves the open space when not in use
 CONs:
- low isolation because of thickness/weight constraints
- possibility of air gaps between panels/ground/ceiling
So, the FINAL QUESTION is: will it work?
Thank you guys in advance for all your suggestions,
hope to hear from you soon.
Stefano. ;-)
