Hey everyone, i'm a student that has just recently started a music technology course. Now with all of this being completely new to me, I'm a little stuck. I've been set an assignment where I've been asked to design a studio to record commercial music. This is how it goes;
a) Design a studio to record commercial music. This should include both popular music genres (drums, bass guitars and vocals) as well as small classical acoustic sections. You may also specialise in other areas such as TV/Film audio post-production and full orchestra recordings, though this is not obligatory. Your design should include a floor plan detailing equipment layout and an equipment list with individual item costs. You are not required to provide costing for cabling, acoustic treatment and materials. Expenditure on equipment should not exceed £750,000 and should be calculated at current retail or realistic second hand prices. You need not include capital (building) or design costs. b) Support your choice of equipment and provide a critical analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of your design for the above recording requirements. c) Describe in clear detail an appropriate signal path for recording and monitoring a vocal in your studio. This should include an appropriate choice of microphone.
I was just wondering if some people could point me in the right direction of what main equipment I will need, how many mic's etc? I'm finding it really difficult as I dont know where to turn! Any advice on how to approach my essay would be greatly appreciated. Alex
Aoha and welcome to the forum, Alex Here are a couple of things to investigate: - Do a search on RSD for "student", "assignment" etc. This question has been asked and addressed in the past. - Do a Google search on "Recording Studios" and see what kind of equipment they list/use. Here are a few links that may also be helpful: http://www.recordproduction.com/ http://mixonline.com/ http://www.soundonsound.com/ Happy reading :D Aloha 8)
Hmmm....not exactly what I'm looking for to start with. I was wondering if someone can just provide me with a list of equipment I'd need for a studio setup? Cause I have the feeling it's more than likely I'd miss something out. And if anyone knows of a website where I can get a description of signal path & console design, that would also be great. Alex
SoundonSound.com as posted above - building a studio - search on that or similar. and Soundcraft / Behringer - they both have signal path docs for ya. Better still since you are doing a course why not visit a studio or work in one for free for a week? I think if you are going to find "exactly" what you are after you are going to have to do some more legwork yourself - I did and it paid off big time. All the best with your studies/assignment.... 8)
OK I have 3 kids and they need to do research all the time. But I must say if they asked me to make a list for them I would say... NO ...you need to do the assignment yourself. Kendale left you some very wonderful links. If you were to actually read through the links you would have what you needed already. I will give you a hint. Go to a few studio web sites and look at their equiptment list As far as designing a studio this web site is probably the most, if not the only, comprehensive site out there. Like I tell my kids..reading will set you free Best of luck Tom
