Hey All,
New to the fourm here, but been around other forums for years.
Wanted some thoughts and input on my new control room.
Got it framed, electricaled and HVAC'd, now on to the Walls!
In previous studios i built, i did the walls out of 2 layers of 1/2" sheetrock.
Seemed to work fine.
I called in my order today, and my local friendly Sheetrock Guru said i should strongly consider the Temple Inland Soundchoice Soundboard.
On all of my walls i have allowed for 2 layers of 1/2" sheetrock.
Which is better at keeping the sound in and my neighbors happy?
The price is basically the same per sheet, so its not a price issue. I am just looking to keep my noise to myself and to keep the peace in my new neighborhood.
I start sheetrocking on Thursday morning, so any IMMEDIATE advise is greatly appreciated.
At this time, i have decided to go half sheetrock and half soundboard.
But its not too late to change the order.
Thanks in advance,
Dennis

Double Layer Sheetrock or Single layer with Soundboard?

Your friendly Sheetrock Guru is wrong. "Soundboard" is more typically expensive and of lighter weight than drywall, thus it performs more poorly. We've been pretty consistent about that here.
Here is one example (of many) of a thread in which we debunk they myths of "soundboard."
The "search" feature is your friend.

Keith,
I tried search and did not find exactly what i was looking for.
SO, based on your reply, you would put 2 sheets of regular ole Sheet Rock up over 1 layer of SR and 1 layer of Soundboard, right?
The problem with all of this, is that i lost my UNDO button for my new control room. Wouldent you know it! Not even completed yet!
So...once i commit to this decision, i am stuck with it.
If you were doing this today, and your choices were 2 layers of 1/2" sheetrock on EACH wall, or half and half. What would your choice be?
Thanks again,
Dennis
Denis, unless the "soundboard" you're referring to is one of the newer high density gypsum boards that are actually HEAVIER than wallboard, you do NOT want to use it in a wall construction - the name of the game is MASS-air-MASS, and the more of each you can incorporate into a wall the better it will perform - especially at lower frequencies.
Haven't seen a sketch or anything - what type of walls are you building, single or double framed, or??!? STeve
