Hello there.
I´m Carlos, from Madrid, Spain. I've finally had acces to a small basement where I don't have to pay any rent, and would like to use this space as a recording/rehearsal room. As most of my friends play rock music, that is what is mostly be going on in there.
The place is tiny, odd trapezoidal shape. The lenghts are 6.1 and 7.3 meters, width 3.7 and 3.5 meters, around 3m high. The top and left walls on the map included are next to the thick concrete basement where the building is sustained (sorry, but I don't know how to explain it better). The other walls are next to bar offices, made of brick and plaster. The owner of the place can´t give me more details about the walls. Ceiling is concrete with iron beams every half meter or so. Upstairs there's a night club and the stair hall going to the flats. That means I´ve got no neighbors for up to two floors above me, except for the offices (seldom used). I guess sound isolation is not my main issue, but treatment.
Due to the lack of space for something more elaborated, I´ve decided to go with a one-room design. I´d like to accomodate a fixed mix position without wall-mounted nearfield monitors, and be able to get in there a full band playing at once (maybe using panels to isolate amps and drums).
My main doubt is where to place this mix position in this place, how to adress bass traps, and wich materials use to isolate the different walls. I'd like to know if I should have a "default" placement for the drums as well.
Another thing is ventilation. Since this is a basement, should i include any kind of fan, something to renew the air?
Sorry I don't have any sketchup designs, but my computer doesn't support the demo version. This is my frist attempt to explain this kind of thing, so if there's anything important missing please just let me know.
I could and would like to do some basic work and I can get a person who is an acoustic engineer to supervise everything, but I´m gonna need some help mounting any wall and ceiling treatment that may be required, so maybe is important to know my budget, wich is small as the room is. I can get something around 4000-5000euros just to get the room ready.
I'm interested on hearing expert opinions about this, if all this is practical in such a small place. So any kind of help or comment will be most welcome.
Thanks a lot, really appreciate the help you guys give here!
Carlos.
Yet, another small studio design...

ehmmm... maybe I didn't include enough info, so I got a friend of mine to help my making a sketch of what I intend to do. It's made on maya, so I just can include snapshots of what we did. Basically I just need to know how to control early reflections and bass traps, and if this would be the best layout for the mixing and drums position...
Thanks a lot!
one possible problem is the door by the mix console - the band would have to move equipment through a fair tight spot. since you have the sloping wall on the far end already, maybe put the "control room" on that end and the "live room" closer to the door.
you'll definitely need ventilation - fresh air exchange and probably a/c.
