Hi John, thanks for offering this wonderful forum and sharing your knowledge. You were recommended to me, at a recording site. I have an enclosed brick room with drywall interior 20'x30' with 12' ceiling and concrete floor that I want to use as a home studio. When building a booth would I use the 12 foot ceiling as part of a particular booth sound. I plan on using the space to do voice overs commercials and record jazz and classical ensembles. How would you suggest cutting up this space for rooms or maybe I shouldn't. I have maybe $2K to use for right now, on the room. I have around $75K tied up in my Location recording rig. Thanks for your input. -jim
Aloha and welcome to the forum, Jim :D Nice place, your space. Music's great!

- From your post, it appears you could use a control room, live room & iso booth. How about a bathroom? - Are you are planning a control room? (This would be helpful in order to hear your mic selections/placements without having to use headphones, and would give you a place to mix down your location recordings.) - How many people/kind of instruments/large do your ensembles run on average? Here's a recent drawing that could be massaged bigger/smaller to fit your needs, perhaps? Looking forward to your build. Aloha 8)

Thanks Kendale the pleasure is all mine-!! I am glad you like the band I feel privileged to play and record with these guys. I am presently recording all sizes of entertainment in the field but will need to be a bit more realistic about the size of the band here at home. I do not see myself recording much more then say a sextet in the room. Tracking mostly jazz and classical music so the volume shouldn't escalate to much. Do I leave the 12' ceilings in tact or drop the ceiling a bit? I Really like your drawing-!! On the drawing would you please exchange the drum area with the iso booth area, other wise there is a double door opening right where the drawing shows a bathroom. Other then that the sketch is genius! Thanks for all your help Kendale! -jim
Aloha Jim,
I Really like your drawing-!!
We can both thank John for that!

There are many among us that would love to have the height you do, so for the time being, you could consider yourself very fortunate in that respect. When the time comes, there are several options in treating the ceiling/overhead surfaces.

Sure can. Any chance you could post a drawing of your layout that includes your doors, windows and measurements, please? That would really help. Thanks! Aloha 8)
