Here is a crude Calculator for finding the combo's of 1x Lumber to find how much lenght the slats and slots will take.
I was just slapping stuff together and was tired of getting to the last few slats and needing to make huge 1/2 slots.
Enjoy
Oh, I started to try to make a calc of estimating pieces of lumber needed ny inputing length of lumber vs. lenght of slats and how many lumber lenghts I needed for the project. This was above my head and seemed to involve if/then statements or other such things. Please let me know if someone has an equation I can fit into this.

I added equations to average the slot/slat size. It's been a while since school and equations so please, please, please correct or kill me if I am wrong on anything. 8)
too damn late here,
it is wrong, please help - think this calc would be useful here, oh well i'm dead
maybe its more optimal to have something that takes the width, height, and depth of the unit, and then the mid-frequency target or upper and lower frequencies, and calculates the number of 1X needed and gaps?
so you could put in somthing like 3' wide, 7' high, and 1' deep with low of 50hz and high of 300hz and it would output you need 7 1X2 with 1/2" gap, 7 1X3 with 1/4" gap, and 7 1X4 with 1/8" gaps... dunno if thats possible as there are probably interactions between the depth and lower frequencies, and varying the gaps may be complex as well. maybe a fixed gap size?
sounds like a challenging problem...
Yes, that would be ideal but deffinitely out of my scope. For me, it's just as easy to find the average slot/slat and pluf in the numbers in John's calc.
Oh, here it is, I think this is right now:
