Question about "Golden Ratios"

I'm unclear on an important aspect of using the "Golden Ratios." I'll try to word my question as clearly as possible. In room design, do you use the ratios to calculate wall-length, or the farthest points between two opposite, non-parallel walls? How would you apply the ratios to rooms with more than four non-parallel walls, as in a symmetrically- designed control room? Thanks for your help!
