according to the data i got off of studiotips.com that linked me to a glass manufacturer site heres the data i saw 1/2" monolithic glass (one piece glass) has a stc value of 36 1/2" laminate glass has a stc value of 38 laminate glass is a little over twice as expensive as mono glass. why no just buy thicker mono glass to reach you stc value and pay about 1/2 the cost? am i missing something here? i need input, why do i keep hearing that lam glass is the way to go if i can get better stc values for half the cost?
Hi Jeff, Most leakage will be due to the seals not the glass. YOu can spend some SERIOUS money on these doors and more on tilting them as well so not parallel. I saw ex major record company engineer here in Sydney last week at his home studio and he mentioned what has been done with the doors at Sony. He was unimpressed by the STC of their 2 x properly installed doors. He seemed to be a bit "negative" - possibly trying to promote his own studio - his own with 1 m thick walls mind you (3 x leaves) !!! He was kind to have me over but I found the experience disheartening - he mentioned no one can do 5.1 for less that $100k...was he trying to put me off my plans/dreams? Then again I spoke to John and I am following his advice that this combo of 2 x glass doors can work without all the angling etc etc. Just use different glass materials in each sliding door - if placed opposite. I also saw a local Radio station and their setup applies to John's idea. Others here agree and have applied John's principals. So, in the final analysis I would go with the advice of one who has built more studios that we have had breakfasts - John. My doors arrive next Tuesday woo hoo! :D They are 1 x plate 1 x laminated between CR and ISO and 1 x Laminate to outside studio. Hope this helps a bit - it can be confusing but we must take responsibility for our own decision in the end.
