Hi there, (first post)
Current Room
I have a 6m by 6 m by 2.8m garage that i have converted into a room where, believe it or not, i actually do mastering, mixing and record bands.
The walls are unfilled cinderblock which have only been painted. There is no acoustic deadening or any materials on the walls. The floor is carpeted, the ceiling is a pitch roof with the peak in the centre.
There are two windows on either side as you can see from my very basic attached plan, a roller door and an entry door.
Location
I am on 2 1/2 acres on Qld's beautiful Sunshine Coast In Australia, my nearest neighbour is 150m away (and that is my mother in law who lives across the road haha) so noise has not been a problem so far for the last 3 years.
Purpose for renovation.
I have teamed up with a well known producer from Melbourne who has moved to this district and he records a lot of bands(with drums) so he wants me to get the studio more visually and acoustically up to scratch.
I am primarily an electronic artist and have been using synthesizers for over 30 years...so i virtually never use mics.
I like to have a lot of old technology which i am clearing from the room(putting into storage) but still keeping some items.
I am on Mac OS 9 so i can't download the studio planner..my apologies !
The next post will contain what i want to do.
Cheers

Design for garage studio in Sunshine Coast

I have been looking on this site for about 3 months before posting but I would appreciate any feedback regarding what i should do to this room.
Room Size
I understand that its a standing wave no no to have a room that is 6m x 6m x3m which this room basically is.
I want to change the shape of the room by angling the walls towards the front (as per plan..I've no idea of the actual angle !)
I want to keep the rollerdoor as a security measure but want to build a sliding door in front of the rollerdoor which basically seals the room and either have an acoustic curtain in ifront of the door or something for soundproofing.
Obviously there are no provision for bass traps in this design so i don't know how this will work out.
Gear in room
Although its a relatively small room , i have some rather large pieces of gear that i WANT to keep.
The console is a 2.8m soundcraft TS 12. there are two tape machines a Sony 3348 and a Tascam 85/16.
These will be against the wall with a overhang above them.
There is also a reasonably long (2m)keyboard bench on the right side of the room.
Within the walls.
I wish to have a cupboard on each side..one being a cable cupboard and the other being a mic stand cupboard as there is no storage in the room (I've just pulled down all the attached shelving).
On the right hand side at the front i need a computer cupboard which will contain the power supplies to the console and the 2 mac computers.
On the front wall behind the console i would like to indent a 23in Mac cinema screen if possible.
I have a pair of genelec 1031's which i would like to soffit mount but cannot see how i can do that with the computer cupboard and the tape machines in that position...any thoughts greatly appreciated.
The walls would be placed with studs and the obligatory rockwool.
The walls would be 5/8 inch Fyrchek (sp?)
Floor
There are so many cables currently (the console has six snakes of 20 each) and the synths have heaps. i think I will have to put them under a new floor ..the current one is concrete with carpet on top.
I am looking at putting a yellow tongue and groove flooring over the concrete and am still reading up about using conduit etc.
Any suggestion there greatfully appreciated.
Budget
I would like to keep this conversion under $5000 AUd if possible.
Overview
I would really like bass traps, resonators and soffit mounted monitors but I cannot see this happening in my current design (again sorry about the quality)
Any hints, pointers, plans or criticisms would be greatly appreciated !

O
John - you should build something like this.

Thanx John,
Thats great... exactly what I would love to do if the room was all mine !
Unfortunately I need to track in this room as well, so the console has to be
pretty much up against the front wall.
(I will be monitoring via isolation headphones -30db)
Is it possible to soffit without a 60 degree angle...ie as in the Euph photo ??
Cheers
John Nyman
maybe you could do something like this? tight and not optimal though.
Yes, I've heard John say that he's used up to a 90 degree with success. (Music Farm?)Is it possible to soffit without a 60 degree angle...ie as in the Euph photo ??
John - the Euph photo is a 60 degrees room. But, as said, I have worked with 90 degrees.
Here's Music Farm which was Urei 813's soffit mounted at 90 degrees and with a 12 degree forward lean.

Thanx Glen...wow... that is a radical idea !
Its great to get input from this forum as the ideas are fantastic...i would have never thought of that design.
Much to ponder !
