Just finished negotiating a deal on a timber clad barn which will eventually hold my studio!
It is timber clad and used to be used as a carpenters workshop.
Just started the design stage now but am having difficulties with the buildings shape - as you will see in the pictures there is a lot of FLOOR space but utilising it efficiently is prooving a tough job!
This is our first design idea - to have the control room in the bottom right area with live rooms bottom centre, bottom left, top centre and top left with a lounge area above the controll room (top right)
Stairs and a gangway between the top rooms have also been added along with a storage room in a brick enclosure at the far back.
I was thinking about extending the top floor out diagonaly to give bigger rooms up top but this could obstruct views to the downstairs rooms.
The entrance would need to allow for access whilst the studio is in use but again i was thinking of diagonally spliting the entrance area to make a bigger room.
I definatly need a drum room, live room and a vocal booth as well as a lounge area.
If anyone has any ideas i would appriciate the input!
Many thanks,
Ed
Studio designs - any thoughts/ideas?

Ed you must give us more info - like what sizes are the rooms??
cheers
john
The rooms on each side of the gallery are 13" x 13" as is the space under the gallery. The store room and the room next to it are 9" 9' x 13"
At the moment there are only the outer walls (timber clad on 2x4 frames) the ceilings above the three outer rooms (at 7" 9') which are mdf laid onto 6 x 2 beams . The ceiling height from the second floor to the roof is 9" at the wall (lowest) edge and 15" at the apex.
The store room has a small opening between it and the smaller of the three rooms and is just a plain brick wall.
The doors span the middle 13" x 13" at 5" each with a 1" gap at each side - they open outwards and are 8" tall.
Floor is concrete - although very uneven concrete!.
There are a few holes in the outside cladding which cant be fixed from the outside due to the building being listed.
The location of the building is in a rural area with a couple of other barns being used as storage + a couple being used for business (an estate agents and a car graphics designer)
Hope this is enough info! Oh and budget is 10,000 pounds (roughly 18,000 dollers)
Cheers!
Ed - I'm sorry that is NOT enough info - you are talking about a two storey building and trying to describe it in layman's terms - draw a damn plan at least!!
Here is the first floor plan - i will try a 3D sketch up of the building (hmm)
Here is a rough idea of what was in my head - along with this there would be a vocal booth UNDERNEATH Live Room 1
With this the ceiling has been extended a bit to gain some extra space.
Just downloaded smartdraw - hope this gives more an idea of what i had in mind.
A few notes -
The control room will also have vision of another two live rooms above the two in the picture plus a lounge room above the control room - these have acsess via a gallery at the top of the stairs.
EDIT - just added a very scetchy plan (planideaatmpt1) using sketch up - please excuse my uselessness with the program!
Basically this is showing a view looking to the right from mix position in the control room - you can see a small pitch roof leading up to the second floor room view is through the right hand window - left hand window looks under the stairs into live room 2 - hopefully somebody can make this out !!
- The second floor part of this plan is to show the existing structures end so the bottom floor extension on live room to can be seen.
Thanks for the patience! Will hopefully have some more plans and some actual pictures of the building up soon!
