Does it make sense to use RC on a ceiling where there is only attic space above. the joists are 2X 8's if I don't use RC i would use ferring as in typical ceiling construction. the joise bays will be filled with insulation and a am using 2 layers fo drywall (5/8th). Thattic space is open above all rooms (control room and 2 live rooms.) the walls are double 2x4 studded w 2 layers of drywall on either side. Is the RC worth the expense.
The problem with a simple question like this is that there is so little detail from which to work. To give a simple "yes" or simple "no" requires a laundry list of footnotes to qualify the answer based on so many variables. Looking at all of your previous posts for the past couple of years, it seems that is the pattern... You ask what appears to be a simple question, but than we need to pull details out of you before the answer can make any sense. May I suggest starting over with a single thread for your project, in which you start out following all the guidelines in the "Before You Post" announcement? That would help us (you included) tremendously. If you decorate the thread with lots of detailed drawings and photographs, and keep it active with updates of your progress and any follow-up questions that come up, you'll find a much greater value here and we will have a much clearer context in which to answer those questions. Just remember that while there are certain principles that are more or less contant in this realm, every project is unique, especially when retrofitting an existing building. Requirements differ a lot too, as do budgets. Compromises are inevitable, and sometimes you have to "cheat" -- and when you do, you have to know the cost of that cheating and determine whether or not it's worth the cost. What's right for you may not be right for someone else, and vice versa. --Keith
Well are you trying to keep sound from exiting or entering through the attic/roof? If you're not worrying about sound escaping then you don't need RC at all, or two layers of drywall. But since you said you're already planning on using two layers of 5/8" drywall, I'm assuming you're trying to stop sound, in which case, you would benefit from using RC. But like Keith said, more info would be needed for the experts to help you.
See what I mean about footnotes? Too many variables...
