Hello, Thanks for this great forum. Much valuable information in here. I read many of the posts to learn how to construct a studio. Jhon makes some incredible designs, i was amazed! I am now getting into the phase of actual construction in a few days. I saw the sketchup designs and with all the info came up with 3 possible designs for my studio. I would appreciate some feedback on if i did it ok, or not. And how much sound isolation will i get aproximately obtain with each design. I need the best sound isolation i can get because im also a percussionist and drummer. I will be rehearsing and eventually recording some personal projects and maybe for others. The studio will be constructed in a semi-basement (i attached some pics and plans that i draw). The basement has 2 rooms, one will be for live tracking (room2 in the back) and the other as control room (room1). room 2 has no windows. room 1 has 1 door and 1 window. All doors will be double doors and windows are isolated. I'm the new guy on the block! The naughty neigbours are aprox. 20 to 30 feet away. My designs for the live tracking studio: Fig.1) Room design 1: room within a room construction based on wooden construction only, with 2 to 3 layers of plywood, OSB or gypsum board. Rockwool isolation in between studs. Use of 1 layer of 2mm sheetblock sound barrier on all surfaces. Fig.2) Room design 2: A room within a room construction based on metal framing that is not touching the concrete walls or concrete ceiling structure. it will stand on its own. The metal framing is stuffed with rockwool and closed on both sides by plywood and gybsum board. Also has sheetblock layer in between. (i'm afraid of metal resonance with this design, i imagine that the entire metal framing will resonate on low frecuencies..is this possible?????). Fig.3) Room desing 3: Going for the heavy duty sound isolation here!lol. I construct an entire brick room inside the actual room and reinforce it with 2 layers of osb plywood or gybsum board. Also use sheetblock just in case. Rock wool between studs. The ceiling a 3 layer wooden ceiling will hang from the existing concrete ceiling by metal u-hangers! I go for a similar approach of room design 1 but i reduce to only 1 layer of plywood plus 1 layer of gypsum to reduce the loss of room space! (im afraid i will get a boomy sound because of the brick wall????is this possible). If you were to choose a design, what would it be?? for best sound quality and best isolation. This is just the isolation construction. I will do the interior design later on. (i attached a drawing of a possible room design with angles and absorbers). I will get more into this later. I will also construct a drum booth inside the constructionm just in case. The room is not so big (see dimensions in drawing). Bye, Dan

Welcome; a couple of your drawings are oversized for most people's screens, please re-read this http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3231 and if you're having trouble resizing, let us know - someone will be glad to help you with it, then we can get into your solutions  Thanks... Steve
I also think i need to rezise, but how?? I saw when i submitted my post that the pics were to large. but how do i delete the images on the post to upload my new ones?? Or do i have to submit a new post? bye, Dan
i think i rezised!
If you have photoshop or irfanview, just resize your images there and then repost them. Sorry if this isn't much help.
Paz Lerryns Hernandez www.lerryns.com
getting no help at all... :(
Dan, sorry for the delay - I've been buried in paying jobs lately, have to take it while I can get it :? Haven't forgotten you, but I'm out of time for now. I hope to be able to do more in a day or two - meantime, maybe some of the other members who've already been thru some of this can help? Guys??!? Steve
Which of the various layers you've drawn are already there, and how thick are they? Are they airtight sealed, not quite, or do they have weep holes for moisture drainage? After you answer these, and while you're waiting, please do a search (on this forum) for mam m-a-m triple leaf and do some more reading - some of your sketches are already too many leaves of mass for best isolation/lowest cost and labor. So I need a drawing of just what is already there, what material, how thick, what condition it's in, anything you thing might (or might not) be helpful... Steve
ok. i did some reading and found some clear manuals and books on construction. im clear on what to do now. i will go for the staggered stud framing construction technique with insulation and wooden walls, ceiling and floor. thank you very much anyway! I would suggest if possible ... :P ..you could make a short precise 5 to 10 page general construction manual on how to go about framing and making the live room and the control room. With some basic drawings and pictures. It is my opinion that in this forum with all the info, pictures and approaches you really get lost a bit. There is no clear structure on how to start a construction proyect and finish it with general guidelines. I find the pictures and designs great and the forum has lots of info. I also find the info on the wall units amazing. But my question is: if this site is giving so much valuable info, why not structure it so we can all start organized??? it looks more like an audio engineering and carpenters puzzle. And evryone is asking the same questions. Anyhow i think this site is the best on this topic, i have visited numurous sites and even bought books and they say nothing, only theory and BS. We need practical construction approach step by step with images. :D. Im sure you people can do it,and even sell it on this site. I be the first one to order. bye. dan
