Quick and painless speaker positioning???

Is there a quick and painless technique for aligning speakers in reference to the mixing position. I have tried mapping it out in auto cad and using lasers etc... It just turns into a mess and I end up tweaking each speaker for an hour before I get them in the right position. I was thinking maybe cutting some thin wooden dowls to length and using that to create the equilateral triangle. Any suggestions? Thanks, B
