Hey, everybody! If you're about to lower a ceiling around 50 cm and 1 m to make a floating one with gypsum board, how would you fill with insulation to get a good fall in sound transmision? Would you build "mini-hangers"? Would you glue insulation on the old ceiling? Would you put your insulation over the gypsum board? Would you do both...? I'd like to have your feedback here or any different idea. Thank you very much and my regards! Chino
Hi: Mini-hangers?... you mean to hang the insulation in-between the two ceilings? How are you attaching the new gypsum board ceiling? I'm sure you know that it must be attached to some sort of support system (like joists). I think you need to provide more details, as per the 'stickies' at the top of the post topic page... Otherwise, those in the know here will be less likely inclined to respond to your question... I'm NOT in the know, and I'm not sure if you'd wanna fill the space entirely with fiberglass or not (as it is kinda large)... But again, you need to provide much more detail.. K

Hey, K!

Yes; I was kind of kidding with that name, but that's what I meant. :P

Yes, fiberglass is what I'm going to use. And the question is if you think that making an inner filling (not tight, but kind of loose, wrapped around some string lines) would be good enough. I hope that was more understandable. Anyway, I'll try to post some drawings to let you know what I mean more precisely, if my question it's still confusing. I apologize!! Thank you! Chino
First thing you want is at least 150-200mm loose insulation batts laid on top of your inner gypsum to damp any panel resonances - as to the rest of it, depends on the overall size of the room, what OTHER treatments you have (or intend), etc - also, is this inner ceiling to be part of your mass-air-mass isolation or is it going to be more of a false ceiling for internal acoustics only?
