Hey Guys,
I've been doing alot of research over the past year and this is the best site I've found for studio design questions. Thanks to everyone involved for maintaining a site of this callibur.
I've recently purchased a house in Ottawa, Canada with an unfinished basement and, over the next few months, I'd like to turn that into a studio.
Right now I'm in the research/planning phase but I have a pretty good Idea of what I'd like. I need a well balanced control room, a live room for recording drums etc than can double as a rehearsal space, and a vocal booth.
I will be recording all styles of music from very quiet acoutic music to "holy crap I cant hear anymore" rock so isolation is important to keep outside noise out for the quiet stuff and keep inside noise in for the loud stuff. neighbours are fairly close (maybe 20ft) on the sides, no rear neighbours.
The Current construction is as follows.
- All outer walls are Poured concrete, with insulated 2x4 walls 16" O/C inside them which are then drywalled.
- Floor is Poured Concrete
- Ceiling is 12" on center 2x10s open to the bottom. above that is 3/4" plywood then carpet for the floor above.
My budget is pretty open. Ideally I would like to stay under $5000 CAD but I realize that this is not allways possible and I am willing to pay more to get it done right
My main concerns are pretty standard.
- Ceiling height is at a premium because it's in a basement
- Isolation to outside, to above and between rooms.
- I would like to keep the live room as large as possible to accomodate full bands and rehearsals.
- I need to have access to the furnace, hot water heater and electrical pannel
I would like to use double wall construction to maintain the best isolation between rooms and for the ceiling I would like some suggestions for best isolation while maitining as much ceiling height as possible.
For the floor I was thinking that working right on the poured concrete would work well in the live room and put a wood floor down in the booth and control room... and comments on this idea?
Right now, my biggest problem is finding a layout that really works well. this is where I would love some suggestions from you guys with lots of experience. The biggest obstacles I'm finding I have to work around are the Ibeam and Duct running down the center of the basement. I also am having trouble maintaining access to the furnace area and finding a good place for the door to get upstairs.
I have included a sketchup file of the basement and some jpgs of measurements etc. I will post pics as soon as I can get a camera to use.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, any layout Ideas you can offer would be Hugely appreciated.
Thanks again
- Dan.
