To all: Greetings from Nutley, NJ (USA) (Former home of Martha Stewart) First off, I'd like to say that this forum is a godsend to someone like me. I have already made my first donation, gladly I might add! My skillset is varied, but in no way does it include drawing or artwork of any kind. My brothers ended up with those talents!!! I can solder/plumb/wire/and woodwork, all of which will save me a bundle on this project. Sorry for the photos on photobucket, but I could not figure how to load them directly into the posts....... From the standpoint of acoustics, I am in total awe of those who understand the fine points of design, and so I must defer to your wisdom on these. I have made some sketches, fooling around with layouts but after seeing some of the things you guys do, I would not even post them. Anyway, two years ago, I put an addition on my home, and specifically had the basement dug for a home studio, so I am starting with a virgin space, except for the fact that the place is already studded and insulated on the perimeter. Here is a sketch of the perimeter and support column/window locations. Each square on the graph paper is one square foot. It should be noted that the concrete floor is 4" thick, and due to the fact that the main house did not have foundation footings, an underpinning was placed against the "old" foundation, allowing for a floor to ceiliing height of 8 feet 3 inches. Studding is 2"x4" pressure treated, and ceilng joists are 2"x10". Insulation is R-13 Nearest neighbor is about 25' from outside wall. (wall with entry door) Upstairs is a family room with a home theater......can you say BOOM!? BUDGET I'd like to allow $25,000 for construction and $35,000 for equipment. The really cool thing is that I have an equipment ramp that leads to the client entrance door from the driveway. Following is a view towards that entrance. You can see the red curtain of a double hung window that is shown on the drawing. Some of the things I'd like to include if possible, in order of preference are: 1) Control room with 5.1 Surround capability, and big enough for a couple of keyboards....maybe putting one on top of a producer's desk? I would like the control room to be as acoustically friendly for 5.1 as possible, as I really see this as the direction we are all heading. I also want the ability to mix in this format for both music and film. The studio will be ProTools based, with a 24channel control surface. 2) Drum Iso 3) Vocal Booth big enough for 4 people 4) Baby Grand Piano 4A) Amp Iso 5) SMALL bathroom....only big enough to "take care of business" 6) Kitchenette area w/ small sink/fridge/microwave to heat up quick meals and make coffee...possibly combine with small lounge/TV area..... 7) Mic/Supply storage...perhaps creative use of vertical space can give us cabinets? I might be reaching for the stars with this list, but after seeing some of the designs you guys come up with, I would not be surprised if you were to be able to work them all in. The thing to note here, is that the plumbing will require an "up flush" type unit, so it will need to be located toward the top of the perimeter plan (near underpinning) or near the furnace. Behind that studded wall lies the waste line for the addition. At the base of that studded wall, there is also the foundation underpinning mentioned above and seen below, and shown on the drawing: Here is a view of the furnace area: Here is another angle: Here is a view of the supply ducts coming from the furnace: I have a total of six supply registers in the basement....here is one: Here is a view towards the rear/side window...(further one from the doorway) Here is a view of the main supply ducts that straddle the microlaminated beam that runs the length of the addition. On the perimeter drawing, the dotted lines show where the ducts terminate. I can, if needed, locate computer and storage devices in the adjacent "old" basement, however, my wife will have my head if I infringe on that space with a client lounge, kitchen, etc. (too bad, because it would have been perfect to put those things there!!!!! Oh, well, I guess we need to work within the parameters given. In closing, any help/ideas you can give me would be appreciated.
