Hello everybody im San-Te. I have been looking for a site like this for a long time and im so glad i found it. I live in the NewYork area but i bought a home in Ga and will be moving down there shortly. I currently have some space in my basement and I want to build a control room and vocal booth there. I have a freind that will help me do the building. He has built studios before but im not sure if he's done them the proper way. So im doing my homework and I will assist him in the process.
I have neighbors on both sides so I want to achieve the best sound proofing that i possibly can. The space that i have to work with is 12w x 10L x 7.9 control room. the vocal booth is 6x6 room I know the cieling is kinda low so im going to have to make adjustments there. not to sure how, so if anybody can shed some insight on the cieling thing that would be great I have been studying the construction process and i have a desgin (sort of) but Im not sure if it is worth anything. Ive been looking at acoustics also and i want to make sure that i have the best acoustical desgin as possible.. Although i have neighbors on both sides proper acoustics are more important to me than soundproofing.
so here are my goals
Good soundproofing (not sure of the db level but descent isolation so that im not disturbing my neighbors during the day time. I dont plan on mixing to late at night but i want to be courteous to those around me. Im not going to be doing any live recording like drums and stuff. Just simple Mixing and vocal recording on a Daw..
Acoustics is a MUST. I want to make sure that i get the best acoustical desgin for my space b/c its a very small space.... i want the mixes to sound good in the studio but GREAT in the "real world".
Here is a picture of my design i hope to use.. A friend of mine sketched it for me. After looking at some other ideas on the site i started to question the desgin... So if anybody has any kind of input i would greatly appreciate it.
Is this design Worthless????

I am still new at this, but I do know that those parallel surfaces can not be a good thing. Poke around the forum here to see some other sketches, and you will learn some new things and get some cool ideas for your studio.

Are all those walls existing? If not what ones do exist?
If they all do exist sure would be nice to knock some or all of them out (IF none are load beraing) and start fresh in the entire area you've shown in the drawing. That hallway is taking up a lot of space.
Like previously said, make sure to poke around this site at other plans, for acoustics and sound isolation that drawing "as is" is going to be real bad.

thanx for responding currently only 2 walls exist. the wall that seperates the the booth and control room and the brick looking wall at the top of the diagram. the brick wall is covered with sheet rock.
The area where the couch is, is not free space, the only space that i have to work with is that 12w x 10l space where the control room is. I cant bring it back any closer to the wall where the window and the door is because there is a fireplace there.
the room with the booth is an existing washroom. Im going to box out most of the room and put a booth there. Unfortunetly this is the space i have to work with so im trying to find the best setup that i can use. ive been searching on the site to fine better ways of using my space but it seems that i have a unique space. I was thinking about splaying the walls in my control room but i think the space that i have to work with is to small. What are your thoughts?
the drawing is pretty much just a sketch of the space i have to work with.. Ive been studying the isolation part of my control room as far as building and stuff like that but what i need now is an efficient acoustic design that will do a decent job with that space.. If you have any ideas on how i can work the space differently im open to all options.
just in case you need to know im not sure if i mentioned it b4 im not doing any live recording just mixing and some vocals here and there. no drums or nothing of that nature. im going to be working during the day but i still dont want to be abother to the neighbors. acoustics is very important as i want my songs to translate well in the "real world". so if you can toss any ideas or if you know of anyone that can help i would greatly appreciate it.
OK,
1st realize John is much more a design guy then I. As of his last post his ISP was down.
SO could you post a 2D drawing of exisiting walls and conditions. Show us exactly where the fire place, windows, doors and any other obsticles are.
Don't worry about that, we all have unique spaces when it comes to designing a studio.but it seems that i have a unique space.
