acoustical caulk

the important aspect to acoustic caulk is that it never dries out, this helps the seal remain airtight for years and years. i use the osi brand sc-175. it's cheap and works well. never used the auralex kind but i'm sure it's good quality and three times the price of other options
I have used the OSI SC-175 and another called TITE Bond. Both work well.

It's worth looking for the right stuff; even the expensive places on line charge less for a tube of acoustic caulk than your local HD or Lowes does for three tubes of Ge Silicone II (10 oz vs. 29, so it takes three of the "regular" size to equal ONE of the "super size" -

Funny thing is, I've used 35 big tubes of the exact same stuff that John used, and I must say, it does appear to dry out after many months! Perhaps it does retain resiliency... But I certainly wouldn't call it "wet."
This is not to disagree with the recommendation of acoustic sealant, of course... ...Just an observation I have made.

thanx for the help..........
No prob; saw your post over at home rec but had already posted here... Steve
the sc-175 definitely cures, but i wouldn't say that it hardens. remember the importance of backer rod, anytime there are three points of contact the caulk has a better chance of cracking
that being said, the sc-175 is the only acoustic caulk i have experience with, so maybe others perform better[/quote]
ordered the whitecap. thanx again....
