I'm considering building a 12 x 16 ft shed to make into a one room studio. It's all I can get away with in my housing development. I've read through the "from shed to studio" post in the reference section and will try to follow the advice given there.
Here's what I am thinking:
1) Built on Blocks
2) Staggered stud design, insulated, with two layers of dry wall but no RC
3) Floating floor as described in the post I mentioned
4) NO Air conditioning, but a Fan and baffles to keep from suffocating
5) Interior treated with DIY acoustic panels, bass traps, or whatever is needed
My initial questions are:
1) Does anyone know where I could find some basic shed plans that I could adapt? I need something to show my homeowners association. Anything I should look for in particular in plans I might get?
2) Any guess as to how much a project like this would cost if I do all the labor? I live Western Washington State. I'm looking for big ball park estimates.
Thanks for the help.

As far as I know, there aren't any "adaptable" plans in existence - reason being mainly demand. Anything that will actually WORK is too expensive to build for anything BUT music (or serial killer "wet" room  )
Staggered stud construction won't let you do drums (except maybe during the day, if outside ambient noise is high enough to mask it) but it'll handle pretty much everything else (not 5 string bass with a real amp)
Figure somewhere around $3000 for materials MINIMUM, not including insulation (another $800 or so) outer siding to match your local motif ($??), door(s) and seals (maybe $500 per door), acoustic treatments ( anywhere from $300 to $1500), so I'd guess somewhere around $6-7K if you're a serious DIY kinda guy.
12 x 16 is a workable size for a 1-room studio; inside dim's would work out to 11 x 15, and with (real) 8 foot ceilings this is also VERY good modally, so less treatment would be needed inside than for a crappy ratio'd room.
Only real diff between this and "standard" construction would be the staggered studs, double layers of everything, double floor and double ceiling and "herky" door; most (if not all) those details are in the "from shed to studio" thread. If you can draw a basic plan, I'd think the only thing your neighborhood association needs to know is that "it matches, and it's "sound-proof".
You might get more action on this in the Construction forum; I'm moving it there for you... Steve
That was exactly the kind of info I was hoping for.
I was tenatively budgetting $7,000, so it looks like I'm in the ball park.
Thanks for the help. I'm sure I'll have more questions in the future.
