Hey folks, I have a small project studio in New York City. I'm renting in an office building, so heavy construction is not an option. My room looks a little like the outline of a stealth bomber.
I'm trying to find a good spot in the room for my mixing station, a good spot for tracking and some recommendations on acoustic treatments.
I record "indie rock" music using a 1 watt Emery Sound Microbaby and a VOX AC30 (which I usually have to pipe into a Palmer DI), so it's loud, but not Marshall stack loud buy any stretch, maybe 85-90db. I mix at 85 db max, but mostly lower like 75-78db. My neighbors along the upper wall have not complained... too much. I mostly track on weekends when they're not there.
Right now, my listening position is about in the middle of the room facing the bottom wall and I'm noticing that I have turn down the left monitor a little to get stuff that's supposed to be centered to actually sit in the center.
I was thinking of moving the 5x5 DIY vocal booth from position V1 to V2 to free up some room for tracking. It's made of 3/4" plywood and the inside is covered with 4" acoustic cotton. When the door is open, it's essentially a giant bass trap.
I was thinking I would do most of my tracking in the 12'x9' space along the bottom of the picture.
I got some input from Ethan Winer and Bryan from GIK over on the gearslutz forum and they thought my mixing station could either be about 8 feet up from the bottom wall, facing the bottom wall. Or possibly facing the glass wall, not sure about where exactly. I thought 6 feet from the top wall facing the glass, about 6.5 feet away, might be good.
The glass wall was a concern in terms of symmetry. It's not all glass, there's a 2.5 foot shelf and some metal frames surrounding the windows. And the long diagonal room mode from the top-left to the bottom-right was a problem, if I understood correctly. A couple of folks suggested I post here for advice.
To work with, I have 6 GIK Acoustics tri-traps, 2 GIK panel traps, 3 "gobo-ized" Realtrap mini-traps, a bunch of 2'x4' 4" thick sheets of acoustical cotton mounted on cardboard backing, and some Auralex diffusors, but I'll buy more treatments if need be.
I'm not afraid of a little light construction, but movable gobos, traps on stands, etc. would be better.
BTW, the ceilings are 11' high.
In summary, I'd like to identify a good spot for mixing, a good spot for tracking and any necessary acoustical treatments.
Thanks for your time. :)
Help with an oddly shaped room - STEALTH BOMBER

Tom - I'd try something like this

Thanks for the help. My only concern is that there's not much room for tracking. I could track in the V2 area, or because it's made up of panels, I could break it down with minimal effort and track in front of the vocal booth?
Thanks.
Hey John,
the sofa in your draw is only for giants!? :D
i think this sofa ist the definition of :"not to scale"
lol
the biggest sofa i have ever seen.
peace
mika
I think you'll find that the sofa is 6' x 3' - standard sofa. ;)
I don't think John could draw a room or a piece of furniture out of scale even if he tried. ;-) His left hand would uncontrollably jump onto the right hand and sieze control of it to prevent such a travesty.
I better get a loveseat then. :)I think you'll find that the sofa is 6' x 3' - standard sofa. ;)
