I have a rehearsal space that is 17'10" * 11'4" * 8' 1" tall.
One wall adjoins the neighbours house and is constructed as follows from the inside out
Wall construction
1) 2 layers of 5/8 sheetrock
2) 2*4 studs with loose housing insulation
3) 2 inch air gap (except cpupled at the ceiling to neighbours wall)
4) plywood with embedded stone (called cepstone I thnk)
5) 2*4 with loose fiberglass insulation
6) 2 layers of 5/8 Sheetrock
The 'inner wall' is tied to the nieghbours house through the roof. The slab is 'loossely coupled', i.e. separate pours with some spacer material.
The question:
In order to minimize the amount of sound energy going into my neighbours house should I
a) mount my rehearsal speakers on this wall, projecting music away from it, or
b) mount my speakers on the opposite wall, projecting towards the wall (less physical coupling?), or
c) mount my speakers free-standing close to the wall I share with my neignbour, projecting away from this wall.
Edit: My preference is (b), so I can hear well sitting at the drums. I'm suspecting that low-frequency leakage will be my biggest problem and, since the lows are more omnidirectional, having the speakers on the opposite wall is the best solution.
The multi-layerd adjoining wall is the one that is not drawn in the diagram, so the diagram shows the PA speakers facing the shared wall.

sound isolation question

Of your three choices, c) would be the best, then b).
Your location, is it close to where the killing going on? You have my support and sympathy living through that.
Thanks Avare. My only concern with (c) is since the bass is almost omnidirectional, particularly the subs, the power coming out the back of these cab's would still shake the wall I share with the neighbours more than if they were across the room projecting into the shared wall. Either way, I'll probably do some tests with an SPL meter and my neighbours hopeful cooperation to see how much I can push itOf your three choices, c) would be the best, then b).
Thanks also for your concenr for my safety. The 'Al-Khobar massacre' 2 years ago was a few km from my house. In fact, I'm heading to that neighbourhood tonight to help a friend move. We're about a 4 hour drive from Iraq. But my life is simple, my son is just preparing for his second tour of Iraq (USMC). God bless the Corps.Your location, is it close to where the killing going on?
