Hey Guys,
I'm putting together a modest home studio in my basement, and I'm sruggling wth some layout issues, . . in particular, . .where the best locations to place the mixing console, and the drums. . .
unfortunately, I need to have the mixing console in the same space that I will be recording. The room is roughly 40' x 17' with a few awkward angles, and a 8' celing that drops down to about 7.5 on one side of the room
Anyway, I was also thinking of adding a few 4'x8' acoustical absorbent panels to the ceiling over the drum and the mixing board , ..as well as a adding a couple of 4" thick (4x8) bass traps in a few of the corners.
However, I'm kinda struggling with the placement of the instruments, and which way the mxing board and drums should be facing in the room, . . l
Most of the time I will be only tracking the drums with a bass guitar that would be picked up with a DI box directly in the console. So isolation is not going to be too much of a problem. . .
So, if you guys wanna share on of your ideas where you think the best areas to place the drums, and mixing console, and what direction they should be facing that would be really helpful!
I have attached a diagram of the space, including a few possible ideas for the layout. Thanks so much.
Studio Layout suggestions!

Anyone, . . anyone, . . Buehler?
Okay, well anyone wanna take a stab at what area of the room that the drums and consolde might work best, . . or which drection the drums should face? :D
Aloha,
How about this?

Hey Kendale
Mahalo! I appreciate the comments, . . I was just in
Oahu a few months ago playing drums for the National Tour of A Chorus Line~ I really dig your hangin out on your islands man, . .!
Anyway, I like your suggestions. . But, I think that my diagram is a bit deceiving, . .that dotted line that is to the right of your setup is not a wall, . . that entire room is all open, and unfortunately, I cant construct any additional walls in the space, . .so, the space as to act as a dual recording/tracking space. So, I'm not if having the console in an area that doesn’t have two side by side symmetrical walls is such a good idea. BUT!! hey, I could be wrong, . .that’s why I'm asking you guys!
Aloha Red,
Glad you enjoyed your visit. I've yet to make it out your way. I've got friends in Bethesda I've yet to visit someday.
Is something like this a viable option for you? http://johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic ... ght=#15598 and here: http://johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4091 One might consider them as either "portable/temporary" walls or as heavy duty gobos. Aloha 8)I think that my diagram is a bit deceiving, . .that dotted line that is to the right of your setup is not a wall, . . that entire room is all open, and unfortunately, I cant construct any additional walls in the space, . .so, the space as to act as a dual recording/tracking space.
Hey Kendale!
Thanks for the input man, . .I appreciate it! Unfortunately, my budget wont warrant those options. But, I think eventually, down the road, and I put more money aside, . .that might be a great option!
However, I think that I've decided on STUDIO SPACE_B2. I'm thnkin that with the console in that position, . . it will give me the best option. Especially since the space is going to be used as a dual room for both recording, and mixing.
However, I’m still not sure what part of the room that the drum set should be located, . .and which direction it should face, . . either in the middle facing the short wall, . . or on the opposite side of the room facing the mixing console.
