Howdy folks...long time no post... I'm building a drum room and I already have a 5/8 ply subfloor down w/ walls and ceiling already framed. It seems that my floor is the weakest link as of right now. I've got a couple of options just based on materials I have now... 1) lay down 1/2" OSB, then hardwood 2) lay down 1 sheet of 5/8" sheetrock, then 1/2" OSB, then hardwood (designer/builder/engineer of a very well respected Philly studio gave me the sheetrock idea a while ago). 3) lay down this rubber roofing material (similar to sheetblock), then 1/2" OSB, then hardwood. I could always run out and get thicker OSB, if 1/2" is too thin....
What's your existing floor built like - concrete slab, ply over joists, ??!? Also, are you concerned with flanking between rooms, between floors, or? Just too little info to be much help yet, sorry... Steve
sorry about that Steve... i've got a roughly 8'x10' drum room in the works. the floor of the building is concrete, then i have a sheet of 5/8s ply over 2x4s sitting in U-boats about 20-24" on center. It's pretty solid, so i guess I'm not too worried about flanking...main concern is maximum isolation.
What your saying is you only have 1 layer of materials for the floor? And the walls are already built floating on top of this floor??? Now just to simply answer your question, sheetrock is fine as a material in your floor construction. Ply-Rock-Ply is fine as a layered floor.
Thanks Giles... i'm gonna go for it...
Did you put insulation between your floated floor joists, hopefully slightly compressed by the plywood? IF not, be prepared for some serious resonance problems. Also, I'd maybe consider TWO layers of rock before the upper plywood cover; the more mass, the better... Steve
whaaaa?? i've got some R13 in there ...hopefully that'll be enough (prolly should've chickenwired the bottom and used roxul). too late now!... i already threw the layer of rock on the floor and the 1/2" osb subfloor. FWIW i've already cut some drums in there w/ the one layer of 5/8's on the floor and the outside of the walls rocked w/ the roxul exposed on the inside of the walls...no noticable problems....in fact, it was killer....i guess the added mass is only going to help.
R13 is cool. Interesting enuff my drum room floor was stuffed with R-13 as it was cheaper than rockwool, although my walls were stuffed with Rockwool.
yeah...same here. got rockwool in the walls, ceiling, etc. Giles, i just realized you're in philly...is that a recent move?
