Me and the wife are looking to buy a new house in the next few months, and one of the things we have been looking for is a space for me to have a studio. The latest place we saw had a finished basement with cement floor, and aside from the ceiling height in the middle where a large beam runs across, it looks like it might work out for me. I bought the book "Home Recording Studio: Build it like the pro's", and now I am a bit confused. It says that you will get more isolation with 2 walls that only have drywall on one side, rather than 2 walls with drywall on both sides. In the case of an already finished basement, if I am planning to build walls inside of that for a control room and tracking room, would I be better off ripping down the drywall that is already there, or is that part of the seal for the outer leaf of the 2 leaf system? I am a bit confused on this part.
Yes, I'm afraid you will be better off ripping off the existing drywall inside the "finished" basement. (They finished it alright, but you then have to "unifinish" it, else you will have a three leaf system which is not good. Sealing is still of utmost importance. Welcome to the forum. Good luck with your househunting. --Keith
