if I managed to deaden the ceiling by building it inside out so the inside had exposed rockwool - what would be the best for the floor?
Most studios I see have some kind of wooden floor so I presume this must be best, but if the room is fairly big - ie about 9mx9m then is still the case??
Also how about carpeting the floor and building the ceiling the usual way around with plasterboard on the inside??
wooden floor vs carpet for live room??

With a wooden floor you can lay a rug down to deaden it if desired.
Deading the entire room is not the goal, I beleive it's a 50/50 thing, to taste.
Big reason for reflective floor is that our ears always know where the floor is, for a reference point.
I started my design with inside out walls, but I've dropped it for many reasons. Sound isolation is better then standard way because of more possible layers of plaster board, much better caulking sound leaks around edges and a deeper air space between mass's. Constructing and lifting an inside out wall 9m long will take a lot of man power.
Part of me still thinks it would be really cool to construct an inside out wall, however sound isolation is my main goal.

I think you are right. I am having normail ceilings and will possibly build some traps that will diffuse the sound a bit. Isolation is the key as you suggest. 8)
