Hi all, I have been checking out this forum now for about 6 months, after a LONG wait I have finally sold my house and am looking for a bigger house with A GARAGE!! ... what that means is i can finally dump my roland electric kits and use acoustics from home again..
The garage will be soundproofed (which I will come to once the house is chosen.)
However I am wondering if the house type / garage type will make a big difference in my future soundproofing. I am not saying I will chose a house 100% on garage but I wonder if any of you have experiences you can share...
The main two types are the integrated garage (below)
or the separate garage (below)
I am a pro drummer so the studio will be used in the day for practice and recording and evenings for teaching so I am very interested in the max soundproofing..
Not to worried about noise in my house, the mrs is used to it, but new neighbours need some thought...
thanks
Geoff

There's a bit more to it than that; a separate structure will have a LOT less flanking into the house, but if that's not an issue I'd look more at exterior shell - the more mass (and the easier to plug any holes with high mass material) the better. Strong ceiling/roof is also important, ceilings are usually the weak area. Make sure the existing space is at least 2-3 feet bigger in all directions than you need, so there's room for inner, massive walls - a heavy mass-air-mass envelope is what does the trick for stopping ALL frequencies of sound...
