Can Those Who Know please advise?
I'm contemplating building a small one-room studio / music room in a loft space (see my very poor diagram), it'll be between brick gables and above a bedroom (so sound transmission through the floor will be an important consideration) - at the moment the (4x2) joists are only adequate for the ceiling below, so I'll in any event have to add further (6x2 or 8x2) joists on hangers into the brickwork, running parallel to the originals across the short span: would I better partly (LHS of sketch) or fully (RHS of sketch) filling the void between the ceiling and the room below? I'll mainly be working on acoustic music with the ocasional foray into electronic / dance (although not too loud, I have neighbours to consider!) and my daughter may want to use the room for her drumming on occasions (ulp!) although most often with practice pads (phew!)
I am concerned that the 90-degree angle at the ridge may be a problem, so I envisage a part-cylindrical "cloud"/ slatted-diffuser mounted below the ridge, and I asume I'll need bass trapping - can the latter be constructed in the otherwise useless space in the eaves, perhaps behind louvre doors or similar so that the high frequency end is diffused but isn't absorbed too much?
I'm assuming that the desk will be across the 8'6" dimension, to leave one end mostly clear for performing (and a sofa for relaxed listening), and that I'll need acoustic treatment / diffusers on the (parallel, vertical) brick walls to each side for early reflections etc., but is it likely that the sloped ceilings (3/4" plus 1/2" plasterboard onto foam insulation board over the rafters) will also need treatment?
Any obvious pitfalls I'm lining up for myself?
TIA for any contributions,
Dave H.
Awkward space?

Aloha and welcome to the forum, Dave :D
Say, any chance you could resize you pic to about 600 pixels wide, so we can avoid having to scroll back & forth to read your post, please? Thanks!
You'll probably get more of a response by doing so and this will really come in handy two or three posts down the road. It's also part of the forum guidelines: http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3231 Thanks!
Looking forward to your build!

Read up on bass trapping. Turn that room on its side and it's not much different than quite a few rooms I've seen. Since sound looks at a room as a 3 dimentional space, it doesn't care if it's awkward for you to walk around in. Just by looking at your diagram I can say with a far amount of certainty that you're going to need a lot of bass trapping in those low corners. And putting your desk on the 8' 6" wall might be a bad idea. That's just like putting it in the corner of a room. I'd put it on the 25 foot wall.
A room mode calculator probably won't do much for a room like this since those are really more for square rooms. The people here should be able to help you place your monitors, desk, and listening position.
