First, thanks to everyone for all the great info here, it has helped a great deal. We recently got the chance to double our studio/recording space to about 60'x20'. We were able to build a double wall between the practice space and control room but we had to leave the control room rectangular (17x19x10 tall) instead of angling the walls. The objective is to be able to build speaker soffits and angled diffusers inside the room that we can take out with us if we ever move. I have acces to a decent millwork shop so we can fabricate the soffits, bass traps and diffusers pretty easily. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks, chris p.s. Sorry for the hack job with sketch up but it might help. The dimensions are correct, though.

Check out "Are my speakers in a null" in the acoustics forum to see where to put speakers and your head, then click on the John Sayers Productions logo at the top of this page and go to "wall units" for ideas on some portable treatments; finally, what speakers will you use and what's their published low frequency cutoff? This will determine best soffit baffle size (I'll help you with this after I know the cutoff frequency) You'll also want to use a fairly deep rear trap - a stud frame and mineral wool batts aren't all that "permanent", and would be simplest - at least 2 feet deep if possible, and at least 4" of MW lining the trap and across the face (cloth covered) Side wall early reflection absorbers (search here on the "mirror trick" (no quotes tho) - also search on "cloud" - a recent member (Dave French) has an easy design over on RO http://www.recording.org/ftopict-26889.html Your dimensions don't look too bad, just a slight "hole" down around 50 hZ but otherwise fairly smooth modal distribution so you should be able to get a pretty tight sound with just normal treatments as above... Steve, Thanks for taking the time to reply. We have Mackie 824's as nearfields - flat to 39 hz 3db down at 37 hz and JBL EON's for the soffits - 39 hz cutoff. We are planning to use the Sayers corner bass traps with a soffit built in for the jbls. We have room to make the corner bass traps larger than the 24"x22" design. Would that make much difference? Say 3'x3'? We have designed the room using the Sayers wall units for absorbers and deflection. We were planning on angling the rear bass traps out to also act as deflectors away fron the mix position, but had planned on making them 12" deep, so thanks for the advice on using 24" deep traps. Would rw stuffed into the triangle behind the angled bass traps help out? We were also planning on using a reflector the same size as the window into the studio space opposite of that window to keep the reflections symetrical. That cloud design looks great and is simple to build. Thanks again. Cheers, chris
