Hi everyone. I thought I would make a post/diary of construction that has recently started on my studio. It is located in the North West of England and is in a cellar under a warehouse. The area is quite large - about 300 square metres. The only pain is that there are big metal support posts every 4.5 metres across and 3 metres up (you'll see what I mean in the plan). Estimated budget is about £15-20,000.
I have basically decided to have one nice big live room, a smaller stone room, a small vocal booth, store room, lounge area with kitchen and bathroom and a hexagonal shaped control room. I plan on building two iso booths in the live room and possible splitting the store room in two at a later date and making half of it a wooden live room.
Here is the outline plan:

The red dots are the posts which cannot be moved. There are two access points - stairs & a lift I am putting in. Looking at the plan, the dimensions are horizontally - 4.5m between red posts and vertically = 3m between posts. The height of the walls is 12 feet at the lowest of the arch and 14 feet at the highest.
Here are a few photographs of what the empty space looks like

As you can see, it is a pretty decent space. The control room is sound built with 2 walls like this:
live room: 3 sheets plasterboard on 2x6 frame packed with rockwool : 10" airgap : 3 sheets plasterboard on 2x6 frame packed with rockwool : control room
Inside the control room I am going to leave it open and just cover the frame with canvas type cloth. The control room will be on a frame floor - 2x6 frame filled with sand. The internal of the 2 control room walls will be built on the floor frame, and the ceiling will be on this frame.
The other walls are just 2x4 stud with plasterboard and filled with rockwool. If needed I will upgrade these later, but obviously the main concern is soundproofing the control room! I also intend to put a 2x4 stud with rockwool around the perimeter of the live room.
My other main concern is the possibility of sound leakage from other units surrounding my studio. To one side is a band rehearsals space which is well sound proofed. Underneath is nothing because I am in the cellar. However to the right is a steel construction workshop and above is a kitchen manufacturers. The general noise is not bad, but I would like to dampen down the occasional bangs of large planks of wood banging on the floor etc. Luckily the walls & ceilings are very thick stone walls so the majority of teh sound is stopped, however it would be nice to just add something extra to prevent as much bleedthrough occurring as possible.
I also need to consider ventilation, but I have a good idea with that.
Any advice or tips would be much appreciated & I will keep you all posted how construction goes :)
Mark
