Oh... my head... Am I supposed to be learning this much outside of school? Is that legal?Sonic, Not quite there yet......... the 3 dB increase is a doubling of power - not amplitude.

K, It really is a lot simpler than you would think.......... The simplest way to explain it is this: When ever possible we build on the basis of 2 leaf systems with the interior isolated from the exterior. When it is impossible to do this - well - then it's impossible, and we live with what we have to live with. From that perspective there is no real use in kicking ourselves........ we just deal with it. And sometimes we are forced into that even in the case of new construction. The air lock is a perfect example. I was doing a consult 2 weeks back for a very large home studio - where there was an airlock between the main live room and the control room - and at the back of the airlock was a 1/2 bath. The owner and I discussed the whoe situation - and he had thoughts of removing the live room side of the air lock to maximize isolation. I told him I believed it would be a mistake- this because someone could be in the control room with him and choose to use the bathroom - or be in the live room and wish to go into the control room - and when one door was opened the remaining walll/door assembly would still provide the isolation needed between the 2 rooms So this is a case where a 4 leaf system is really a necessity - and thus I don't make a big deal out of it.......... What's most important (from my perspective) is that we are aware of what the best possible world would be - that we create that world wherever we possibly can - and then we live with whatever is left. When the world deals you cherries - develope a taste for cherries.......... Sincerely, RodIt's NOT the concepts of the 2-leaf system, or 3rd leaf I don't understand.... it's rather the adjustments to this 'rule' that need to be made from time to time to treat 'real' world situations....
Wow... the forums are such a friendly place...
Right on Rod, right on.
I like your attitude on living with what you've got if you can't fix it or make it better. That's pretty much where I am right now with almost every wall in my studio. Back when I was building the walls I had NO idea what a leaf was. It wasn't until 5 years into the build that I had ever heard the term. I thought I had done all the research I needed, but as it turns out, you can never know everything and there's always more to learn. So I live with what I've got... which is REALLY REALLY good isolation between my studio and the rest of the house. I just have to wonder how much more isolation I would have gotten if I had placed all the mass in the walls in the correct place.
Yesterday I turned on my THX speakers from my computer up so loud that it hurt my ears everywhere in the live room (29' X 15') and when I shut the door going upstairs, immediately the sound pressure level was cut so dramatically it actually FELT weird. To have THAT much sound stopped by one door was actually weird to hear happen. And when I went outside my house, I heard absolutely nothing. And I did have my sub cranked too.
I just finished the ceiling in my live room, that's why I was doing this test. It's the first time in 6 years of building that I've actually been able to test the sound proofness of my studio... and it was awesome. And technically I've got three leaf walls in a few spots, but there's probably enough mass to simply make up for it, considering I got enough OSB for FREE to cover every wall at least two times. Not that it's ideal, and I know I'd do it differently now, but it works for me. My main concern was always sound leaking outside so my shitty neighbors would stop calling the cops on me.
