Hello everyone ! It may sound a little peculiar, but I do think I can fin answers to may questions here, among you. I want to build a HushBox for my BIG projector. This thing is noisy because of the 12 fans it has in it. First part of the project was to handle air flow in and air flow out. Second part is to build a box around everything that will suppress (I hope) most of the noise. This noise is made by the air flows and the vibrations the fans inflict to the metallic structure. This baby is rated 52/60db depending of the fans models and the floor/ceiling position. The Box would mesure 1m width x 50cm height * 80cm long. It will be hanged under the ceiling on the same support as the projector and the flow manager are. Mine is under the ceiling, in the noisiest position. What I am looking for is some advice about which material I could use to suppress the sound. I plan to make a box surrounding most of the proj, and make it fit tight with rubber straps and joints where it will be needed. For example, the lenses cannot be covered easily, so I think I will go aournd them and use some sort of foam I can cut in the exact shape to fill the blanks. Do you have any advices for me ? I will greatly appreciate I you do.
Hey, I used to have a 16mm projector setup and watched 'real' movies.... Never got around to making a booth for the projector due to school... Was considering a sort of 'blimp' thing, but then you get into the issue of supplying ventilation for the lamphouse, and then there's always reel changes... Is your setup with big size reel capacity, and how are you dealing with film sound?
Hello ! My projector is a Video projector with high definition capacity. I have already thought and built the ventilation part, I now need to make a box around everything.
What kind of fans are in use? Small 12v 80mm fans? If so have considered replacing them or using blower fans instead? Just some thoughts.
RNO, Could you post picture(s) projector in it's hung spot? List of ceiling construction would help too. I hope this will help users of the forum to give you some advice. Marc
Simply do what is done in the real theaters. Create a sound proof area for the projector with a glass window for the projection to get out. The nice thing about light is it can get through glass, where as sound cannot. :) can someone kick me for stating the obvious? haha Where are you looking to use the projector? Could you make a projector closet to house the thing? The cool thing about the fact that you're only using a projector is that you know exactly what frequencies you're trying to stop. Musicians have to stop a very wide range of frequencies, including very low ones, which makes things much harder to deal with. It should be real easy to build yourself a little closet for the thing and make it really sound proof. Just make sure you run some kind of HVAC to the room because it'll get hot in there otherwise, but be careful how you connect it to the rest of your system or you'll transfer the sound from room to room through the main HVAC trunk.
Hi Everyone ! I am so grateful you want to help me ! So here is the beast : In blue IN air flows (cool) In red INSIDE or OUTSIDE air flows (hot) That beasts has 12 fans 2 x 120mm on top (2 red arrows) that extract hot air from the projector 3 x 120mm inside (3 dimmed red arrows) that pulses air into the CRT guns hotsink all the other blue arrows are 80mm or 92mm fans that pulse ambiant air into the projector. This projector, represented in floor installation, is actually upside down, hanged under the ceiling via a home made system. This beast is about 100kg This side view explain how I plan to manage air flows. I have built a box, that make a clear separation between ambiant air pulsed-in and hot air pulsed-out. I want to plug a air condionned splitted system to give the pulsed IN flow a real cooled and temperature controlled air. The projector produces around 3.000/3.500 BTU. I would like to build around this thing. ******************************** Now for the Noise mesures : - 10cm in front (optics side)

These mesures have not been made on my projector but on another one, same model, but on the floor. (much less noise productive) That being said, I think the levels are higher with my ceiling installation because the hot air have to be pulsed down ... and go up (logical) and tend to be re-injected in the projector to cool it again ... except it is not as cool as the first time. Fans are rotating at higher speed, not making that much noise, because they are very silent model, but the air flow is getting noisier. I think the frequencies may be the same, but the levels are higher. Am I wrong with this assumption ? I have asked my friend to make another set of noise mesures at 50cm high, top / front /rear / left / right. Concerning glass idea : It has been deeply investigated, and the main problem is the 3 optics, as each optic has a different angle (to make them converge). There are lossless optic glass used for that kind of application, but I don't know how it would handle the angles, and if the resolution (1080*1920) won't be altered. The solution the most idealistic was to put one windo in front of each optic. But it is realy hard to make the box ... Anyway it was the best idea. The other idea is to make the box round tightly the optics, with caoutchouc joins. What do you think ? ps: I will make pictures of the installation/projector tonight (if I can)
Well you're not going to be able to put the thing in a sound proof room if there isn't glass for the light to get out. There isn't a magic device that cancels out the sound made by the device... it just doesn't exist. I think you'll need to look into what kind of glass you could use, or live with the sound of the projector.

I thought that maybe I could find some plastic/rubber joins to close the box around the optics, so glass won't be needed after all. Caoutchouc is a good noise manager, isn't it ?
Actually it's an interesting idea... make the front of the projector stick out of the box... hmm... I hadn't thought about that. You'd have to construct the box in a way that is extremely tight around all the edges of the projector. Use CLOSED CELL foam weather stripping all around the edge where it meets the box. When you put the projector in the hole for the front to stick out make sure the weather stripping is compressed. Yeah, it could work. I'd have to hold the thing in my hands to know exactly how I'd do it, but it could definitely work.
