wow, what an absolute wealth of information! really cool.
The only thing is that I can't seem to find something specific I'm looking for. Of course, I've tried the search, many hits but I'm having trouble finding the lowdown on it.
I'm talking about how to make an effective sliding door system.
I'll be dividing a long yet narrow room (7,44m x 3,85m) into a lounge and a CR.
between the lounge and the CR I'd very much like sliding doors, that I can open up when I'm working alone. I'd like them to incorporate glass too so that people in the lounge can see at a glance what's going on w/o having to interrupt.
now in this first stage, only the CR will be soundproofed. I'm prolly going for a basic MAM gypsum/rockwool kind of thing. I usually float the floors on mineral wool. So the CR floor will be higher than the lounge floor.
My idea is to let the sliding doors sit on the original floor, so that they overlap the height of the floating floor. if that makes any sense...
the top of the dividing wall w/ the sliding doors will be glass too, to add natural light from the lounge.
I'm really keen on using sliding doors in this room, for practical reasons. Also I think that using an effective two swinging door system is quite an undertaking on its own so going the extra way to get a decent sliding door hopefully won't be all that much of an extra effort. I'm ok with building the sliding doors myself, or having them custom built, if that's a better idea generally.
I'd very much appreciate it if someone could point me to some effective sliding door drawings. It's not meant to soundproof for drumkits. just keeping the girth of the music in and to not be bothered my voices and tv from the lounge when I'm working in the CR.
let me dig up some CAD plans I made and I'll post them in a follow up, hopefully later today. I must say, I haven't found a CAD app that I found intuitive to use. The stuff you guys post looks so clear and colourful. I'm on mac os x, any tips on a suitable app would be greatly appreciated too.
hopefully I can make a picture thread of the studio construction in a few weeks :)
many thanks for your time and I'll report back soon!
building a small tracking CR (mixing CR is the next project)

Hey same here, I was just looking around these forums for plans on building your own sliding door that properly seals around the edges, and I'll be damned if I can't find any. I anxiously await someone's reply.
k here's a CAD drawing I did of the sliding doors, basically to figure out what width I want each door to be. It seems convenient to have the right one open up wide enough to let a person pass through, so that you'd only need to open the second one to wheel larger equipment through.
btw... "bank" is Dutch for couch, in case you're wondering. In fact, incorporating a bank into a studio is a great idea! :D
as you can see the room gets a little narrower on the CR side.
the right wall (bottom on the pdf) it's actually a brick wall.
on the left wall it's some sort of casing that I'm not sure about.
I think it's applied to disguise a big heating tube and a bearing beam.
I'll have to trash the thing to know :)
sooooooon
From your drawing, am I correct in thinking you want to build "pocket" doors? IOW, glass doors that disappear into the walls? Steve
yes, knightfly, that was my idea.
if they can offer sufficient damping, that would be my pick.
it would save space, plus I could open them up when working alone.
I'm thinking, in stead of having them paralel to the front wall, I could have them w/ an angle;
i.s.o. =--= have them go down in a slight V shape.
then there could be a a wooden vertical bar in between the doors for them to (electromagnetically) seal on. making a tighter seal possible.
I guess these electro magnetic seals are the best way to go.
the question is, can single sliding doors provide sufficient isolation to be able to work well in the CR whilst people are talking and watching tv at the other end? I was thinking about two panes of double glass of different thickness separated by about two inches.
the plan is to soundproof that lounge (other side of sliding doors) at a later stage too, so that it can really function as one large CR that can be reduced in size if need be.
what do you think and how would I go about this? I'm having trouble finding info on how to incorporate sliding doors like this, let alone how to build them.
thanks,
Yvo
is there no one who can throw me a bone on the doors stuff?
I'm getting kinda discouraged about designing it myself, perhaps it would be wiser in the long run to just pay someone to do it.
I really don't have money free for that myself, but I could always bum some off my dad
Sorry for the delay; I don't recall ever seeing pocket doors used in a studio - for ANY sound barrier, the best scenario is two heavy masses separated by as much air space as practical. Typically when sliding doors are used, they are NOT pocket types but only half of the space opens, the other half is fixed glass.
Even these types, unless equipped with SINGLE panes of HEAVY glass and two of them are installed in two separate wall frames, aren't very good at isolation.
A pocket door tends to weaken the wall frame it's installed in, which isn't a good idea for a sound wall - plus, when the doors are closed the pockets within the wall would make up a 2-leaf barrier for EACH half of a double framed wall, so that part of the wall would be even WORSE for isolation.
I think all these reasons are why you don't see this done in studios... Steve
