Hi People, I`m new here, This is my first post 8) I`ve found your forum really helpful and also nice people advicing about studio design, great! I live in Madrid(Spain) and I`m building a new house. The upper floor will have the new studio. I`m attaching 3 drawings, one plain floor space, the other one is my own design, including a control room, tracking room and a little storage room. The third image is a 3d view so you can see the ceiling I`m using sketchup since yesterday, so please don`t hammer because the quality! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/ ... nclear.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/ ... slpln1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/ ... l_alz1.jpg now some facts: -the ceiling goes from 6 meter at the top to 2 meter at the bottom. The two skylights in the 3d view are not there, maybe I can put one skylight if you can tell me a good place for it -The control room is the important thing here, it have priority over the tracking room. The studio will be mainly for mixing and mastering, but also for postproduction and my own composition work. I have lots of keyboards and equipment, I can record guitars, vocals or voiceovers and maybe drums but never a band in the tracking room. -I producing electronic music so my clients comes with lot of equipment that they play in the control room -the width for the windows is 50cm. maximum, so I can have a "panoramic view" but not too much glass. -Because the artistic behaviour of the studio, if possible I`d like to have the windows in front of me, the views from there are spectacular. All your comments and advices are really welcome. I`m a bit hurry because I`m starting the construction in 2 weeks! :D Thanks a lot! Synthi.
I rescaled the pics for easy viewing:

nobody??
this is realy difficult. something like this i call a strange layout. maybe this is something for a professional like john or kendale. i can't help you. sorry :(
Wouldn't it be better to ignore the shape of the room and build a symmetrical "room in the room" and use the left over space for bass-trapping?? Cheers, Ola
Jamzone, Even in the case I build a symmetric room inside, I will break the symmetry because the high amount of gear and keyboards, I need a complete wall or two just for keys... Thanks! Synthi
Hi! In that case, why don't build two symmetrical walls on the sides and place the keys there?? I mean, if you have a FRZ in the front half of the room it wouldn't matter if you stuff some gear in there?? You could get some reflections from the keyboards but nothing that would matter... Cheers, Ola
Well, the keys need to be togueter, there is no sense have the keys separated by 5 meters... Also, check where the windows are, If i build walls I`ll be loosing the view and this is important too. I`ve been told by an friend who is also a studio designer that the shape for my room is not so bad, it still have some symmetri, enought for good stereo imaging and not too different from L to R. Also moving the furniture and gear around once done it could be improved. I don`t think I`ll have too much problem with lo frequencies, almost all the corners are very open angles and the room is tall enought. Tahnks, Synthi
maybe something like this?? cheers john

Wow john :) That`s nice! just one question: The slope in the ceiling then goes from the right to the left instead of back to front... any problem? Thanks a lot! Synthi
I gathered from your drawing that the ceiling will slope away from the front position, i.e lowest in front of you sloping back behind you??
John, The ceiling goes from max height (6 meters) at the stairs and bathroom, to about 3.40 meters at the gap marked "77.8cm" between the large windows. Just notice that the 3d view I posted is rotated, you can check the markings on the floor. Also I was thinking in have a little more space at the trap behind in your drawing to make a vocal booth? Best Regards, Synthi
like this? cheers john

Thanks John, Thats even better!! I rerally like that design, I can have all the keys and gear togueter, nice views, and I can keep the booth opened to gat more space if not used. You are a genious man! Thanks a lot! Synthi
