I am moving into a new space that has steel joists in the ceiling and want to hang two platforms via metal cabling to put the monitors on. Will I lose too much bass response in doing this? Do the speakers need a more solid surface (alesis mk2 actives?) Can anyone recommend a ceiling mount solution that does not involve me drilling holes in my monitors for mounting plates? I need the speakers to be about 2' from the ceiling also, hence the hanging solution.
Thanks
Monitors hanging from ceiling with cabling

Hi hayden
look at my thread how i did it. It works pretty good, but its better to hang it with chains instead of cable because this way you isolate the speaker acoustical from the room.

The reason for it is the minimal supporting surface in each chainlink.
hope it helps

It won't change the way your room responds to the frequencies coming from your speakers. No, they don't need a solid surface to sit on. You DON'T want a desk to resonate from them, that's why they invented MOpads (monitor pads). You want them decoupled from the desk. But, just the same way as you want them decoupled from the desk, you'll want to make sure you decouple them from the cables/ceiling/joists. You could hang down 4 cables from the ceiling for each monitor. Use a solid peice of wood and tie each corner to the cables. Then set the monitor on a pad on that peice of wood.
Would I ever hang my $2,000 set of monitors from cables? HELL NOOOOO!!!!! :D Are you kidding me? Some idiot comes in thinking it's fun to swing them around, suddenly one falls out and cracks the cone. There goes a thousand dollars down the drain. I know my desk isn't going anywhere, and with proper isolation from the desk that's all I need.
Thanks for the response ! Luckily, they will be hanging out over about 18' of space below them and are too hard to reach. I am just hoping they don't fall! :) I am really glad to know this will work, because it frees up a lot of space for me.
Aloha hayden,
You may want to consider adding a couple of straps for safety's sake, as well as to help keep the enclosures from causing any mechanical vibrations noises.

Aloha! (I am wearing a Hawaiian shirt today btw :))
That is a very good idea. I will do that, just to be on the safe side. That way, if one of the cables gives, it won't tumble off.
Here is a very crappy photoshop of the stands. Sorry, this is the best I have at present.
