Aloha and welcome to the forum, matt :D A good place to the start is here: Any chance you could please:
Edit your profile to include your location. This is very important, because this is a worldwide resource, and as such, material costs and availability vary widely. For example, masonry is cheaper than gypsum in some parts of the globe, whereas it's the exact opposite in other regions.
You'll probably get more of a response by doing so and this will really come in handy two or three posts down the road. It's also part of the forum guidelines: http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3231 Thanks! Here's a great place to get started on the basics: http://www.saecollege.de/reference_material/index.html (be sure to click on the acoustics, absorbers, construction, studio plans tabs in left hand column) For more in depth info, Rod Gervais' new book is now shipping: http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5670 Looking forward to your build! updated profile...thank for the info already...this site is the best! matt
Matt, welcome to the forums. Some advice I can give is, forget everything you think you know about sound proofing and acoustic sound control. Unless you heard it here from us, or in a book about this stuff, or other forums about this, anything you've heard about the subject is 100% wrong. Don't listen to "construction guys" about building a studio. There are 100 times more myths about studio construction than there are actual ways to build one, and every guy I know who does construction seems to know them all. No, foam is not for sound proofing, it is for acoustic control. No, the best way to make a wall soundproof is not to simply add 3 inch insulation. And be prepared to feel like you're in school for the next couple months. And don't feel like a dork if you take notes. :)
I spent weeks, possibly months here unlearning what I spent weeks, possibly months "learning" elsewhere.
cool!like i said,i know nothing,but i have a great ear.thanks for the responce. matt
