Someone was telling me of this new product for sound absorbers that is cheaper and easier to work with, but after reading the particulars I cant make heads or talis of whether it is dense enough to be used for absorbers.
Knightfly, I notice you remarked earlier in this same thread.

the product is called ultratouch.

Has anyone seen this for sound sbsorbers?

It looks good on the spec sheet:

The 3.5" product seems to have similar abosrption properties to 4" OC703.
Looking at the pix, I wonder if it's stiff enough not to need different methods of support than the rockwool types; also, they comment about it being "resistant" to microbes, etc - and they refer to the 3.5" stuff as being R13, whereas the rigid stuff only requires 1" thickness to achieve R13 IIRC - not saying the stuff isn't any good, only that I'd look closely at some of these differences before leaping into it.
Also, the mineral fiber products are fire resistant enough not to just "pass" a 1-hour fire test, but to be used as fire BLOCKING in some code interpretations - not sure whether this is a big difference or not.
I agree that the acoustic tests look good, and since it's being billed as a "green" product it may become more available than the alternatives - but before I'd recommend it for acoustic treatments (outside a wall) I'd want to "fondle" a chunk of it to see how hard it'd be to keep it flat, etc...
Has anyone found a price? That'd be another possible deal-breaker if it's $3 a SF or something... Steve
dversion posted this link in response to my Offgassing and Green products question in the Building Products forum:

I just talked to them on the phone. They use Bonded Logic cotton for all their value-added products:

The pricing for 1" and 2" 3 pcf raw panels is $2.50 sqft. The 6 pcf 1", 2" and the 4" "Bass Buster" is $4.50 sqft. The 4" stuff is what I would select for broadband absorbers (0.97 NRC at 125 Hz) ...the 2" stuff ("Echo Eliminator", 0.35 NRC at 125 Hz) doesn't look like it will do the job.
They don't have a Canadian distributor, unfortunately.

Or maybe FORTUNATELY - that's about 3 TIMES what I pay for 3", sometimes even 4", rockwool at the local SPI affiliate - think I'll stick to the rockwool shade of "green" instead of that... Steve
There are a few Texas distributors.
It seems the R-13 24 inch wide by 120 sq ft or so is aboput $80.
Like you said Steve that is for R-13.....
That is OK if it matched inch for inch to the 3 PCF Fibreglass, but I dont think it compares directly. The noise reduction figures are "a weighted" doesn't that ignore the lower frequencies below %00 hz or so?
I don't know... I am a drummer.... what do I know!
I think I am sticking to a proven product, although the "non-itch factor " is appealing.

Yes I know - ouch....however this is a special case. My friend's child has terrible allergies so green products are the way to go. I often pay twice or more for grain-fed, organic beef and I'm OK with that. They don't have a Canadian distributor, unfortunately Or maybe FORTUNATELY - that's about 3 TIMES what I pay for 3", sometimes even 4", rockwool at the local SPI affiliate - think I'll stick to the rockwool shade of "green" instead of that...
