Hi there, i ahve been on this forum quite a bit in the last few months collating lots of information.
I have attached a picture of the layout.
We have a building which we are going to use for the studio.
Its a rectangle of about 10meters by 8meters
As you can see from the pic the control room will look out into the live room. We are going to have a vocal bootha nd a drum booth for seperation. There is a kitchen in the bottom right and an iso room for amps.
Insulation and sound proofing will come from a Gyproc Soundblock layer with mineral wool inbetween layers. The whole studio is a room already built inside an old insustrial unit. We are using triple glazing with 3 thinkneses of glass for all internal windows. There are no external windows. There will be a 2 inch wooden floating floor in the live room and the control room. Rest will be carpet.
the celing is 2.1 meters high.
We are in the stages of securing the building and getting ready to build and i thought i would come to the forum and ask for some help.
Any major issues with the design. I ahve not included acoustic treatment in the plan, its just a basic room layout to scale.
Let me know your thoughts.

Aloha and welcome to the forum Chris :D
Congrats on your studio build! Any chance you could please:
This will really come in handy two or three posts down the road. It's also part of the forum guidelines: http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3231 Thanks! Hey, nice drawing Chris!Edit your profile to include your location. This is very important, because this is a worldwide resource, and as such, material costs and availability vary widely. For example, masonry is cheaper than gypsum in some parts of the globe, whereas it's the exact opposite in other regions.
There's a couple of threads here somewhere pointing out cost/effectiveness of regular gyproc/drywall vs the Soundblock line. You might be able to save some $$$ by comparing the two. A search on Soundblock might prove fruitful.Insulation and sound proofing will come from a Gyproc Soundblock layer with mineral wool inbetween layers.
Without having any measurements of the control room, I would hazard a guess that you might want to reorient the room 90 degrees so that your monitors fire down the length of the room. Looking forward to your build! Aloha 8)As you can see from the pic the control room will look out into the live room.
Hi Chris - here is design we are currently building in a space 14m x 8m. It is built in a garage with a traditional truss roof. We first altered the trusses to become scissor trusses to gain the extra ceiling height.
BTW - triple glass is a No No. Stick with two panes of differing thisckness.
cheers
john
Cheers for the replies, Triple glazing is a no no then. No worries double glazinf it is then.
Wow great picture John,
Starting to look at my design and see one major difference. No square rooms in your studio.
Might be time to re think my design.
My space seems a little smaller than yours, i really like your design. We can't move the toilet in my design but would like some input on what you think would be a good tweak to the design. I will post up room sizes later on tonight.
Cheers
Chris Beavis
Chris - our toilet is in the same place as yours. Our building is 4m longer, that's all as we are 8m x 14m.
cheers

HI John, cheers for the reply.
I now have the measurments for my room.
I really like the way you have the control room. My control room seems a bit square.
Could you give me some pointers for my room.
All help is much appreciated
Cheers
Chris
oh and the ceilings are 2.2m high.
Cheers
Chris
How do you guys get the anges and dimentions for the control room.
I haveing second thoughts on my design.
John i like the shape of your room but i'm still a bit confused as to how to layout my space. As you said my space is 4 m shorter. I would ideally like to keep a fairly large live room and the two booths. Before i was trying to keep a bit in with the existing stud work. I think its time to do it properly and if need be move all the walls i will.
So think of the space as below and if anyone could give me some idea's for the layout that would be great.
I have tried a different design
Need some pointers, i felt the control room was too small.
This is a rough sketch.
Getting worried about the whole space need some advice
OK I think i am beginning to get somewhere.
Please can you guys have a look at my room design and Let me know what you think. Everything is drawn to scale but i think some of the measurments will have to be tidied up.
Just got give the keys to my building and now i'm almost ready to go.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Chris
Oh how I wish I could go back to the beginning when I had a clean slate and design my studio all over again. I'd do so many things differently...
Those designs look great. The pictures look straight out of the sims! Or maybe you're using the doom 3 editor. :) I used the Half Life editor back in 1999 to help me visualize my studio design.
You should have a direct access from the CR to the "leisure areas"(read: toilet, etc...).
That is a real problem if you're in the middle of tracking, say, vocals and the drummer sitting in the CR needs to use the bathroom.
maybe something like this beavis??
cheers
john
Hi everyone, been a while, been having problem getting the building off the estat agents, people going bankrupt, estate agents taking 7 week to reply to letter
Anywyas, the extra time has allowed me to redesign the studio.
Just wondered if i could get any feed back from you guys.
We have decided to go with a bigger window in the control room to get better visual with everyone.
Will be added more to this thread later on.
Thanks for any input and suggestions from you guys. Should be getting my hands dirty with building work in th next few days :)
