Hi All - First off, like others, let me reiterate you have a great source of information here. Its also very gracious of the experts and others to lend their time and advice to those picking this up for the first time.
I'm in the process of planning a two room studio in my basement. The location is Ottawa Canada. My plan thus far has a mixing room and a live room, which would be used for recording combinations of guitars, drums, etc (hard rock). I'm a guitar player as well as a drummer and would need this space to impact my family above as little as possible (4 kids, 5 and under, LOL) The house is located on a 2 acre lot, neighbours are not an issue.
The house is 5 years old, standard 7'10 basement ceilings with TGI joists, 16" centres, poured concrete walls (6") and a poured concrete floor, R12 insulation in unfinished walls. I could send pictures if needed, the space is full of toys...
After reading this site for a few weeks, my plan was NOT to float a floor due to ceiling restrictions and the thought that I should focus on the ceiling. I did plan to use all double wall construction (using the existing concrete wall as a leaf), 5/8 d/w, GG, acoustic caulk, etc, with the inner ceiling resting on the inner walls.
In the diagram included, you'll see my plan, which is based on others you have on this site. The black walls represent new walls for me to construct. The plan has the CR in a non obvious location. This is due to the fact that above it, is an open foyer, whereas, the studio (drum) room has a dining room above it. My thought was that the dining room would provide additional isolation for the bedrooms on the second floor.
My estimates (I know, always wrong) say this comes out around $5-6K. I can extend beyond this if needed.
My questions:
- Does it make sense to forgo the floated floor even though I'll have a full blown drum kit in there? Are there any small things (height wise) that can be done to improve floor isolation?
- From this site, it would seem to make more sense to reverse these rooms, but could this be done while still maintaining the best isolation possible? Would the benefits of reversing the rooms outweigh any loss in isolation?
- With this ceiling (7'10"), does it seem reasonable to go with an inner ceiling, the RC approach just seems down right scary to me, and I wonder how well it would work compared to an inner ceiling.
- With this ceiling, does it make sense to attempt to put a modest angle to it, sloped up away from the CR listener position, or just keep it basic and heavily treated due to room size?
- Any thoughts on floor treatment, perhaps hardwood with area carpets in the CR and something live in the drum room?
Thanx all,
Chris
