Hi everyone...after months of looking for suitable property to build a studio in athens(greece) with less than enough funds i came across this nice basement studio that i can rent for a good price. The studio was operational for about 18 years for dubbing and voiceovers but not for music recording. The previous owner assures me that it is properly isolated. There are shops above for two levels as well. The problem is that as you can see from the pictures its not really treated and it looks bad as well. I know the basics of acoustics (read 1-2 books)but i wouldnt know where to start treating the two rooms. Some info about the rooms: a)control room - its about 15 square meters (3x5) and aout 3 meters high. The door opens to the tracking room (image tracking2.jpg). There are a few diy panels there with no insulation and some crappy foam all over the place as you can see from the control room pictures. b)tracking room. its about 40sq and from what i gather there is no gypsum board over the basic structure and insulation but its all there covered with fabric.the floor is carpeted Im really clueless as to what to do about the rooms. There is no set budget for this yet but obviously im renting and not for too long as im looking for proprty to buy but i would like to have a and properly trated studio considering it is my first.(however it wont be for at least 1-2 years). I was thinking of installing wooden floors in the tracking room (maybe half of it)or gypsum boards on the walls. The control room will definately have to be repainted and start from scratch. id be greatfull if someone could point me to the right direction...i have stared doing the design in sketchup so i may be able to upload the floorplan if it helps more than the pictures...

Aloha and welcome to the forum! :D Congrats on your studio build! Any chance you could please:
Edit your profile to include your location. This is very important, because this is a worldwide resource, and as such, material costs and availability vary widely. For example, masonry is cheaper than gypsum in some parts of the globe, whereas it's the exact opposite in other regions.
This will really come in handy two or three posts down the road. It's also part of the forum guidelines: http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3231 Thanks! Are you planning on building new walls/floor/ceiling or just acoustical treatments? If the latter, here's a good place to get some ideas on acoustically treating your room: http://www.saecollege.de/reference_material/index.html (be sure to click on "acoustics, absorbers & construction tabs on the left) and here: http://www.johnlsayers.com/HR/index1.htm Looking forward to your build! Aloha 8)
What do the rooms sound like the way they are? Bet the live room sounds kind of boxy and dull ?? Steve
hi again...been away for ages...i have started work in the studio a few week now...mainly painting and redecorating...ive build my own acoustic panelsfor the control room double layered rockwool ones for the corners and single for the walls and hopefully it wont sound too bad in there...the live room doesnt sound too bad when youre in there...havent recorded anything yet tho...i was thinking of installing wood or laminate flooring and working a bit on the acoustics but my knowledge is very limited so i would stick to the basics...
