well i have the dreaded 10x10 bedroom that i get to make my studio. i do a variety of things in this room: record vocals for hiphop/r&b music, mix the project down on my krk v8s2 monitors, and also create music (sample and synth based) and mixtapes with my turntable setup.
the room itself includes a closet, and subtracting the closet/door area i have a 10Lx10Wx8H sized room with a window at one end. floors are carpeted, and the walls and ceiling are textured drywall.
i presently have it arranged as in the pic below. the monitors are approx. 1ft away from the walls, and there is a record shelf in the closet. whenever i record, i set up my vocalist in the empty area and monitor using headphones.
my plan right now is to treat the room with bass traps and absorbers to get rid of all the fluttering echos and improve my low end. i'm thinking this is all i can do if i'm trying to keep this a one-room solution. knocking out the closet is not an option right now, and unfortunately i can't annex one of the adjoining rooms as a dedicated vocal booth.
but maybe the folks here know better...does it look like i can fit a small iso booth in the room and at the same time construct a control booth, while still maintaining space for my other equipment?
also, i heard that you shouldn't place your monitors close to walls, but i've seen a lot of examples where they are placed there...do i have my monitors too far out in the room?
any advice would be appreciated.
(i do have the option of moving my studio to a 10x13 room, but that will have to take some careful negotiations with my fiance. so let's try to stick with what i have right now. 8) )
10x10 room: recording/mixing in one room advice

Spin the layout round so that the speakers are either side of the window, that gives you better symmetry, simmert..syma, erm makes it better
No need to lose the closet, turn it into a giant bass trap/absorber, as others have done in their bedrooms (search for closet trap/absorber/resonator etc.)
Or pull out the records randomly to make an uneven surface to help diffusion.
You've got no room for any booths (unless you are recording Ompa Loompas), anyway why would you need one if you are just recording vox? Mute the speakers, bung some cans on the singer and all the mics will pick up will be vocals. Hanging a couple of duvets during recording won't hurt either.
Other than that make a few rockwool type absorbers for the corners and you'll be much better off.
Hope this helps.
