hey everyone as this is my first post here, i guess an introduction is necessary my name is joey and i live in connersville, indiana. i have been operating a recording studio since july of 2005 and have been recording/mixing/messing with audio for 2 years prior to that. i have been involved in music for the past 11 years, learning drums and guitar around the tender age of 10. my interest in recording and mixing was founded in my late teen years. not too long ago (about two years or so), one of my great friends decided he wanted to build a studio that his band could practice and record in. they did not like the idea of going somewhere, paying for time, and having to shorten the creative side to recording for financial reasons. so he started enlisting in the advice of my uncle, who runs and operates a studio in nashville tennessee. a few years afterwards, a fully working studio was born and in operation (and in this moment of time, only accessible to his band alone). around this time my interest in recording was growing. expressing so to my friend, he realised that he did not use his studio very often. knowing my dream was to run my own recording studio, and being the very generous guy that he is, jeremy offered the studio to me when he wasn't using it, to do whatever with it i wanted. at this point we both discussed a plan and agreement that it would be operated as a recording studio for recording anyone that wanted a very fairly priced recording. and since then, we've learned a lot of things on our own and have made countless recordings. everything has been great, and i see no sign of slow down. but it has come to my attention that our studio isnt designed very well. in fact, its been put together over a very long period of time with very little attention paid to the construction or room acoustics. i have discovered by my own interest in audio "comfort" that i really dislike the current design. after discussing so with jeremy, he has agreed to rebuild the inside, completely. and in about 4 months, we finally agreed upon a general idea of how the place should flow (a basic floor plan). ok so i've made a design, but i want to do this the right way the first time. so i searched for places to gain advice and help, and this is where i ended up. the studio is inside of a garage. the garage is seperated from the house in the backyard with its own parking lot and everything. i know i may be rediculed for this, but i seriously do not own measuring tape. so i do not know the exact dimensions of the building its self (on the inside). we have a good idea, but im talking about being off by only a few inches (cuz we did measure it at one time). the garage is 33 x 23 (feet) approximiately our current design is a control room that is only 7 feet long O_O and very very wide (combined with the current lounge). the "center" listening position is located on one end of the very wide area. our new design moves the control room the the exact opposite of the building allowing us to have a 13 foot by 12 and a half foot control room. our goal is to have the following: bathroom vocal booth guitar booth drum room lounge loading area control room with side machine room the plan that we've come up with allows for all of this but there are some areas that i am not very clear with. for instance, i do not know how placement of doors will effect sound, or if the new control room will color the sound. these are all general fears im sure, but i wanted to post my design here and hope that someone can give me some insight to what may be wrong with it. so i supposed i'll just post the design as it stands right now, and see what everyone thinks. thanks for taking your time to read the post! the first is our floor plan the second is the control room (the back of the room corrected from the original floor plan)

just in case... the garage doors are sealed from the inside (a wall constructed from the inside totally conceals it) and are located (looking at the new design) at the very back of the control room (behind the bass traps) and the ceilings are all around 9 feet (i plan to make a false ceiling with hanging insulators inside) top left is bathroom, top middle is vocal booth /iso, top right is guitar room middle left is lounge, middle right is drum room, bottom left is load in, bottom right is control, and triangle shape is the machine room (power amps, computers, noisy gear, etc. etc.)
Aloha Jizzleman, Welcome to the forum. Nice layout. Good move on the doors opening out of the control room. Have you considered splaying the side walls of your control room? Aloha 8)
that sounds like a good idea before, i couldnt think of how to do it, but now i think i know how i can manage it also, there seems to be some parallel walls left in the other rooms (drum room and guitar room) im trying to think up ways to change them without losing much space i also plan to build a guitar cab closet. most of the stuff i record is metal so, having a really tight iso room just big enough for a cab will be really beneficial to me for tight guitar distortion sounds anyways, what should i be aware of as far as wall thickness? the current design is 4 inch thick walls... i imagine they'll be much thicker in the end right?
