This is my first post to this forum although i've been reading the excellent advice for quite a while.
I am building a new studio on the side of my house and i am looking for advice on how to split the space up and treat the various areas.
I need to use it as a small pratice studio but primary will be to record vocals and solo instruments (guitar, bass etc...). I may also record an entire band so i'd like to option if possible.
I quite like the idea of glass doors as this allows me to oepn them up to create a larger space.
Recorded music covers all styles except thrash metal.
Not sure which design to go for as i'd like a vocal booth but i'd also like a decent mixing room but i'd also like to keep as much space as possible. I just seem to have too many choices !.
I have no nieghbours to worry about so i'm not worried about noise leaking from the building.
Any advice you could give would be most appreciated. I have looked at the information on the site but am nervous about making wrong decisions with the available space.
The roof is being installed next week and they will be installing floor loadable rafters. Is a flat ceiling better than pitched ?? - i do have the option of leaving it open but i'd lose some loft storage space.
I don't have a budget but i wouldn't really want to spend any more than 2-3K (GBP) on the internals.
Thanks to anyone that can help me out here.

New studio advice...

Aloha,
For the sake of easier reference for all, I thought I'd post your pics.

Thanks for doing that for me.
Is this something i could have done myself ? - i'd like to learn !
Regards
Andy.
There are two ways to show images. One is by attaching them as kendale did. The other is by using BBCode's "img" tag so that they appear "inline." Each has its advantages and disadvantages... Although doing the inline method may not work with imageshack hosted images (they may prohibit external HTTP REFERER [sic]).
Thanks for the advice. I wrongly assumed the attachment option would not display the image in the message.
Any idea's on what i should do with the available space ? - The more i think of it, the more i get confused !
Andy.
Does anyone have any advice for me ?
Should i keep this room as one large space or would separating it with sliding glass doors work.
I've read quite a few of the articles on this site to get a grounding but i need advice before going further with the build (i'm up to wall plate level at the moment).
The ceiling height will be between 8 - 9 foot but i do have the option of not actually putting in the ceiling so that it extends into the sloping roof (see pictures).
I can't honestly say that i fully understand the technical aspects of this site but i'm keen to take advice and learn.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Andy.
It's small but this might work.
cheers
john
I appreciate your design. You're right it's small space but it's all i have !.
In your honest opinion is it worth going with this in such a small space or should i simply look to treat the room the best i can and accept that i will have imperfections ?
Thanks for your advice.
Regards
Andy.
Andy - if you treat the room you are going to have do something similar to what I've drawn anyway. having a seperate vox booth will always offer an advantage. You could put pocket doors instead of the slider as pocket doors slide into the wall cavity leaving the door space open which makes the room feel like one big room.
cheers
john
The pocket door design sounds excellent so i'll look into that.
Thanks for your advice, i have read loads of the posts on your site but your direct answers have given me much more confidence.
The block work is complete so i'll get some photo's together and post them as the construction progresses.
Thanks again,
Andy.
